Trump cancels visit after Denmark PM rebuffed Greenland proposal

① US President Donald Trump has put off his scheduled trip to Copenhagen after the Denmark Prime Minister poured cold water over the former’s proposal to buy Greenland.

② Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen expressed “regret and surprise” over the latest development and called Trump’s acquisition-interest “absurd”. Her unequivocal response with a hint of sarcasm has rattled Trump’s cage.

regret: regret doing something.

call: express + something

acquisition-interest 收购兴趣

absurd 荒谬,可笑

unequivocal: ambiguous

a hint of something 少量的

rattle someone: to make someone angry

③ The autonomous territory under the Kingdom of Denmark is of large geopolitical interest on account of its strategic location and abundant natural resources. The largely ice-covered island, flanked by the North Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean, is a quarter the size of the U.S.

autonomous region自治区域

on account of 考虑到。。。

flank: at the side of sth 在某物旁边 左右相接 和 be surrounded by不同

④ Trump has been obsessing over Greenland for some time now and his government is not the first U.S. administration to propose the acquisition. Back in 1867 and 1946, both Andrew Johnson's State Department and Harry Truman offered to purchase the land but their plans fell through.

be obsessed over/with 被。。。所迷住

⑤ Moreover, America has a history of big-ticket real estate deals. The US purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867 and Louisiana from France in 1803.

⑥ Trump’s tweets on Greenland went viral in no time. New Yorker’s satire, “Denmark offers to buy US”, had Twitterati in splits.
