ORIGINS AND RELATED WORDS

1. the ego 

"ego-" in egoist and egotist is from Latin root "ego", meaning "I".

trick: "t" stands for "talk", so egotist is the egoist who talks a lot :)

ego: denoting one's concept of oneself.

relating words:

egocentric: n, adj. extreme form of egoist.

egomaniac: n. mad form of egoist.

egomaniacal. adj of egomaniac.


2. others

"alter" is from Latin meaning other.

variant: "altru"

altruism: philosophy of altruists.

altruistic: for the benefits of others.

alternate:  

alternate as  an adj: skip one and the other.

alternate as a noun: the other person who take over the original choice is unable to attend.

alternative: other choice.

alteration: a change. (a making into something other)

altercation: a verbal dispute. (having other opinions)

alter ago: another self.

"vert" is from Latin verb verto: to turn

intro-: inward

introvert: turn inwards

extro-: outward

extrovert: turn outwards

ambi-: both

ambivert: turn in both directions

ambidextrous: able to use both hands with equal skill.

ambidexterity: noun form of ambidextrous.

dexterous: right hand(Latin); clever with hands(English)

sinister: left hand(Latin); threating, evil, dangerous(English)

gauche: left hand(French); clumsy(English), more of a social sense.

gaucherie: rude.

droit: right hand(French)

adroit: skillful

adroitness: noun form of adroit.

They are generally used to describe people.


2. love, hate, and marriage

misein: to hate. (Greek root)

anthropos: mankind (Greek)

misanthrope: hates mankind.

gyne: women (Greek)

misogynist: hates women.

gamos: marriage (Greek)

misogamist: hates marriage

Anthropology: the study of human.

philanthropist: who loves human and help people

gynecologist: the medical specilist treating female disorders.

mono: one

monogamy: one marriage at a time.

bi: two

bigamy: two marriages at a time.

polys: many

polygamy: plural marriage for either males or females.

polygyny: A man has many wives.

polyandry: A woman has many husbands.

andros: male

-ic, -ous: an adjective.
