Mrs. Geller: Do you know what it's like to grow up with someone who is critical of every single thing you say?

Monica: ...I can imagine.

Mrs. Geller: I'm telling you, it's a wonder your mother turned out to be the positive, life-affirming person she is.

Monica: That is a wonder. So, tell me something, mom. If you had to do it all over again, I mean, if she was here right now, would you tell her?

Mrs. Geller: Tell her what?

Monica: How she drove you crazy, picking on every little detail, like your hair... for example.

Mrs. Geller: I'm not sure I know what you're getting at.

Monica: Do you think things would've been better if you'd just told her the truth?

Mrs. Geller: ...No. I think some things are better left unsaid. I think it's nicer when people just get along.

Monica: Huh.

Mrs. Geller: More wine, dear?

Monica: Oh, I think so.

Mrs. Geller: (reaches out to fiddle with Monica: 's hair again, and realizes) Those earrings look really lovely on you.

Monica: Thank you. They're yours.

Mrs. Geller: Actually they were Nana's.

「what it's like to do sth.」本来如果没有「do you know」前置的话, 应该是写成「what is it」, 但现在因为嵌套在另一个句子里面, 所以这里顺序调整成正常陈述句, 举个例子
- When is your birthday?
- I don't know when your birthday is.
「critical」挑剔
「every single thing」很典型的美式夸张用法, 同样还出现在:
- S02E11 Chandler: Well now you understand how I feel every single day, ok? //The Lesbian Wedding 上 Joey 说自己看到一群 Lesbian 就好像失去力量的超人一样
- S01E03 Chandler: And Ross, with his over-pronouncing every single word? //大家表示受不了 Chandler 的冷笑话, 他就举出所有人最明显的缺点, Ross 的则是一定要很清楚地发清楚每一个词的音, 所以这里这样强调
- S05E24 Phoebe: I'm gonna be one step ahead of you, every single time! //Phoebe 被跟赌人 "偷" 走很多钱之后非常不满, 所以强调自己一定会每次都抢在她前面
「I'm telling you」我跟你说哦, 言下之意是你一定要相信我
「turned out to be」表示结局是怎样 / 结果是怎样, 通常是接 sth. unspective (不愿意看到的事情)
- S05E03 Chandler: So uh, now that little Chandler turned out to be a girl //Phoebe 生的第三个宝宝本来打算取名「Chandler」
- S09E23 Charlie: I was enganged to a guy who turned out to be gay!
- S01E07 Rachel: Well, the cat... the cat turned out to be Paolo's cat!
「positive」正能量
「life-affirming」对生活呈积极态度
if 从句如果用的时态是一般过去时 (had / was / would) , 这里是虚拟语气, 用来假设没发生的事
「drive sb. crazy / nuts / insane」把某人逼疯
和第一个重点一样, 「what you're getting at」放在了另一个句子里才正装成陈述句, 否则应该是「what are you getting at?」
- 「if you'd just told her the truth」正常时态应该是 you tell her the truth, 但这里因为和过去相反, 所以 if 从句要用 would + 过去完成时
- 「things would've been better」同上, 所以把主句 things are better 变成现在这样, 这种用法还出现在:
  - S04E13 Chandler: You know if I had just called her after our big, stupid fight, she never would've gone out with Nick. //就是 Chandler 误会 Kathy 之后没直接打电话那次
  - S09E20 Monica: Oh man! If I had known I was coming to this party I never would've gotten married!
  - S10E05 Amy: Well, if I had told you, then it wouldn't have been surprise, now would it?
「things are better left unsaid」这里 left 是 leave 的被动语态, 表示有些事情还是没有被说会更好
「get along」相处很好 / 处得来

「what it's like」连读成 wha-dici
「like to grow up」里面, to 读成 te
「grow up」连读成 grow wup
「critical of」读成 critical lef
「I can imagine.」可以连读成 I cani magine
「turned out to be」连读成 turn-dou-to be
「life-affirming」连读成 li-fe-firming
「That is a wonder」读成 Tha-tis-a wonder, 重音在 wonder 表示强调
「If you had to do it all over again」重点句
- 「had to do」读成 had do (也就是说 to 整个不读), 这种说法还出现在:
  - S06E10 Joey: I had to get out of the apartment.
- 「do it」读成 do wit
- 「all over」连读成 all-lover
「right now」爆破音失去爆破
「would you」读成 wou jiu
「tell her」里的 h 被击穿连读, 直接读成 tel-ler
「Do you think things would've been better if you'd just told her the truth?」
- 「would've been」读成 wouldeve ben, would've been 重音都不在它们上面, 所以尽量弱化, 把重音交给前后
- 「better」是前半句的重音, 而不是 been
- 「you'd just」因为没有直接展开成 had 而是 'd, 所以这里同爆破音失去爆破一样处理
- 「just told」爆破音失去爆破
- 「told her」里的 h 被击穿连读, 直接读成 told-der
- 这个句式和发音在老友记这几个地方等处也有出现:
  - S09E24 Phoebe: Yeah, I-I, I might've said yes, but that would've been wrong.
  - S10E14 Ross: Little heads-up would've been nice.
  - S02E20 Susan: Oh shoot, that would have been fun.
  - S09E15 Ross: I would have been really good in advertising.
「some things are」里面的 things are 连读成 thing-sar
「just get along」前面爆破音失去爆破, 后面 get along 连读成 geta-long
「I think so.」是少数「爆破音 + 辅音」不失去爆破的情况, 因为英语里面有专门的 [ks] 的发音, 比如这几个单词里的 [ks]
