“How to say ‘I want to kiss you’ in this language?” Salix asks.
I open this dictionary in my hands, an unspeakable scent crushes into my nose, I remember I felt it before but I couldn’t remember where or when. Let me see, the index of “I want”, wait! Since when I started to recognise Chinese? Sunder, she taught me in my dreams. So many nights before….
“No such expression?” “Wait a second…, yes. ‘Mua-su-mo Mua-su-mo o-mu-sam o-mu-sam’, you have to kiss the receiver the next second on the chin, it means ‘I want you to kiss me’ if the speaker just looks into the eyes of the receiver.”
“So, Cyano Mua-su-mo Mua-su-mo… o-mu-sam o-mu-sam… what? Don’t leave me waiting.” “It says if the receiver also speaks this word with eyes fixing upon the opposite person, it means ‘I want you to kiss me first’. Mua-su-mo Mua-su-mo o-mu-sam o-mu-sam.” He laughs out loudly, “so funny, let’s play it again.”
We couldn’t wait to get outside when there’s a sign of sun. Now we’re sitting at the platform with many other people, I think we’re looking at the north. It’s like the earth had slipped a great angle in one night, light orange is lying on the horizon, about to wake up and shine, but it disappears so soon. Only some purple left as his trail. While everyone has a happy face. See? Tomorrow will be brighter. Two lovers are sitting in the corner biting each other’s lips, cigarettes between their fingers. They don’t need the sun to keep warm. Sunder stands by the door wearing white, she’s smiling comprehensively. I wish she would keep that face when she sees me.
“Sunder, I wish you happy back in your country.” She shakes the cigarette, ashes drift away in the wind. That smile is still on, but I can see the corner of her mouth is trembling, “I don’t know what to say… I don’t want to go. I need to stay here but I was fired, I want to stay here in this sacred place….” She leans back on the glass door, looks fragile as a thin glass column. I have no more words to say to her, I want to tell her to let go. But she just had witnessed Devo’s death, that wasn’t easy.
“Salix, how did we make it to the frost forest? There was no light in the forest?” “Artificial sunlight on weekends, don’t you remember?” The artificial sunlight is created by the domes around every sites, most of them are scattered around the stations. The only station without dome is this research station, I heard it existed before, but was removed because the invention of the insulation glass. Researchers don’t have to go out to do the research. The dome above the frost forest station is the smallest I’ve ever seen, and it doesn’t cover the forest out of conservation purposes, but it was enough for the hiking when it’s lighted on weekends.
This moment Sunder makes a small sound, she’s amused. “What’re you laughing at?” “Frost forest was abandoned many years ago, no one goes there.” Salix laughs, “you have to visit there one last time, it’s worth it.” “Why would I go somewhere abandoned, anyway…,” she lowers her head, “I just… never heard anyone talked about it, like no one talks about my country… maybe I should have a visit.”
This is a total great news, she’ll be happy. We all should get out of our little world and see with our own eyes, this world isn’t what people tell. And the Bluenised creatures, the great creation of nature.
In the corridor back to my room Salix speaks abruptly, “what made her change her mind?” “I don’t know. Maybe she doesn’t have a last wish here.” Salix nods, “and we gave her one, to see the nature here for the last time. Cyano you’re clever!”
No I’m not.... This time I can’t hear that Salix speaks his mind, just my inner voice. Oh I miss him so much. I want to touch his body again, but I’ve left him behind, to get back into the reality. I thank him for saving my sanity. You must wonder he’s the reason to lose the sanity. But no, he was holding us together, away from the loneliness.
Before we sleep again Salix asks again, “how to say ‘I’m cold’?” “Ma-sa-lo ma-sa-lo o-la-san o-la-san.” He tightens his arms in excitement, “you remember it! How you did it?” “Because it’s special. It has the same meaning with ‘I’m warm’, ‘I’m lonely’. Yes, I remember it well. It must be hard to believe and I don’t understand just like you. There’s philosophical meanings behind it. From a mad woman. I think she was clever. People could use more words to express, and she just invented many unnecessary variations to even a single word.” Salix now is looking at me with enchanted look, “you’re talking like a philosopher. Mua-su-mo mua-su-mo too complicated let’s get straight to the point....”
