VMware improved storage integration with support for
high-end fibre channel SANs and sharing of virtual
machine storage containers between ESX Server hosts.
That made possible VMotion, which allows host migration
of running virtual machines between ESX Server hosts
with zero-downtime.
VMware DRS 2 works with VMware
Infrastructure 3 with VMware VirtualCenter Management
Server 2 to automate the balancing of virtual machine
workloads across the Virtual Infrastructure
VMware clusters: VMware Infrastructure 3 with VMware
VirtualCenter Management Server 2 also introduces the
new concept of VMware clusters and some new
capabilities built on them called VMware DRS 2 and
VMware HA 2.
VMware HA 2: A second major new feature based on ESX
Server 3 clusters is VMware HA 2. VMware HA 2 uses the
inherent high availability of clusters to provide a new
option in protecting critical services. With a VMware HA
2 cluster, the loss of an ESX Server host due to a
hardware failure, rather than being a catastrophic event,
simply means that the resource pool available to the
cluster has been reduced.
VMware Consolidated Backup 3: The final major new
technology delivered with Virtual Infrastructure 3 is called
VMware Consolidated Backup 3.
