C2-Advanced-Manager vs. Leader
对话
A. What do you think about this candidate for our new CFO? She was culled
from a list of hundreds of applicants.
你对这个新首席财政官的候选人怎么看?她是从几百人的名单中选出来的。
B. Let me take a look. Hmmm, she obviously has great credentials, but she
seems more like a manager type than a true leader.
我看看。嗯,她的资历看起来不错,不过她更像个经理人而不是领导者。
A. What are you talking about! Look at the bottom lines she’s been able to eke
out of the small start-up that brought her on board. That’s the sort of
business-minded thinking that we need here!
你在说什么!看看她给那个请她共事的起步公司扩大的利润。这就是我们这要的商
业思维!
B. She’s impressive, there’s no doubt, but the sort of analytical and rational
thinking needed to get those sorts of results isn’t what a leader needs. We need
a dreamer.
这点是很了不起。但是这种分析力和理性思维不是领导需要的。我们需要梦想家。
A. I don’t follow.
我不明白。
B. A CFO is a leader. A leader is someone that needs to be able to dream big, to
inspire others with their vision.
首席财政官是领袖。领袖需要敢于想象,并以此激励员工。
A. I’d say those profits she pulled in were pretty big!
但是我觉得她为上间公司创造的利润非常大!
B. Yes, but the way she went about it was more akin to someone with a skillset
better suited to managers. Managers are more about practical thinking and
controlling systems and structures, not re-inventing them
对,不过这更像是一个职业经理人擅长的事。职业经理人需要有务实的思考能力和

掌控系统和架构的能力,而不是发明创新。
A. That doesn’t necessarily mean that she’s not capable of doing all that.
但这不代表她没有那样的能力。
B. Of course not. But look at the details of how she drove those numbers: she
refined and optimized existing structures and processes. A leader is someone
who in that situation should eschew that in favor of trying to re-invent the
wheel.
当然不。不过看看她增涨运营额的细节:她精炼和优化了现存的结构和进程。而领
导者在那种情况下应该摒弃老的架构,重新开拓一片天地。
A. Re-invent the wheel? So now you’re saying we need a modern-day Da Vinci?
重新开拓一片天地?你是说我们需要一个现代的达芬奇吗?
B. Hah, I meant it as a metaphor. What I mean to say is that we need someone
that looks towards the horizon instead of the bottom line and is able to
translate their imagination into a vision that can energize a company’s
workforce. People more suited to managerial positions are often not
predisposed to that sort of extroverted, abstract thinking.
哈,我只是打个比方而已。我想说的是我们需要一个有远见的人而不是只看眼下利
润的人。他需要把这种远见转化成愿景来激励员工。职业经理人一般不具备这种跳
脱框架、抽象的思维。
A. Hmmm, I see what you’re getting at. You know, my friends have often told
me that I’m quite the dreamer and can lead groups wonderfully…
嗯,我知道你的意思了。其实,我的朋友经常跟我说你是个梦想家,也可以很好地
带领团队。
B. Hah! I had to beat you over the head with the differences between managers
and leaders for you to understand, and now you’re saying that you’re the ideal
charismatic abstract thinker for the position? Keep dreaming.
哎,我跟你说明白职业经理人和领导者的区别都废了那么多力气。你居然还觉得自
己是个擅于抽象思维的有魅力的领导者?这不是做白日梦吗?

Grammar
quite the(真的)
The word “quite” is often synonymous with the word “really”.Both words can be used to add emphasis to your expression. So, in this case, when we are saying something is “quite the [noun]”, we are emphasizing that it really is [noun].
quite这个词经常和really是同义词。两个词都能用来加强语气。所以这次我们说某物是quite the 东西,我们是想强调真的就是那个东西。
例句:
She told me you had quite the party last night.
她告诉我你昨晚的派对很棒。

The story of Silicon Valley has been the story of big dreams. From founding companies Apple and Microsoft, to more modern examples like Uber or Facebook, the company’s success often rides on the visionary power of the leader. In many cases, after the departure of the visionary, the company just isn’t the same. When Bill Gates left Microsoft, the company seemed to have lost its way.In the case of Apple, few people argue about Tim Cook’s talent, but Steve Jobs’ shoes were pretty hard to fill.Actually, Steve Jobs didn’t wear shoes.Hmm….
