Highlights from Day34

When achievement motivation goes sky-high, it can crowd out originality: The more you value achievement, the more you come to dread failure. Instead of aiming for unique accomplishments, the intense desire to succeed leads us to strive for guaranteed success. As psychologists Todd Lubart and Robert Sternberg put it, “Once people pass an intermediate level in the need to achieve, there is evidence that they actually become less creative.”

After the election, prices went sky-high.

2.crowd out:排挤,挤出,字面意义就是从某个群体出剔除出去,to force someone or something out of a place or situation.

例句:Supermarket chains have crowded out the smaller shops.

3.dread:惧怕,担心,to feel anxious or worried about something that is going to happen or may happen.

He dreaded the prospect of being all alone in that house.

I’ve got an interview tomorrow and I’m dreading it.

4.strive for:strive为努力、奋斗的意思,是个比较正式的表达,to make a great effort to achieve something. 通常的搭配为strive to do sth或者strive for/after sth.

例句:We must continue to strive for greater efficiency.

5.intermediate:中级的,中等水平的,have more than a basic knowledge of sth but not yet advanced; suitable for sb who is at this level.

比如说:an intermediate skier/student
