滞留江中
硬硬的，沉沉的
守在江底
如今，这世界遍地洪流
但某个深处
石头还在

The Soul In Miluo River

Every year at this time
I wonder why you were so determined
to hold that rock.
Was it that you knew in advance
that in the following two thousand years
the sky would not become bluer,
the river would turn more turbid,
and the weight of hearts would become lighter?
Clouds have fallen into the river.
The river has flowed east with no return.
The Chu State that you died for,
the Qin that you ever hated,
and the Han that you would never know,
all vanished with the flow into ocean,
except for the rock
—the only soul that was clear and sober,
that was once in your arms,
and now stayed in the river,
solidly and heavily
holding its ground at the riverbed.
Now the world is flooded with all kinds of flows.
But somewhere in the deep,
that rock still holds.
At least I hope so.
Otherwise I will definitely cry
—cry over your death
that might have been offered in vain
Writer's Note: About two thousand years ago (approximately 278 B.C.) in the ancient state of Chu during the Warring States period of the Zhou Dynasty, after learning of the capture of his country's capital, Ying, by General Bai Qi of the state of Qin, the famous poet and minister Qu Yuan threw himself into the Miluo River holding a rock. He is known for his patriotism and contributions to classical poetry and verses, especially the poems of the Chu Ci anthology (also known as The Songs of the South or Songs of Chu). Every year on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional Chinese calendar, people celebrate Duanwu Festival to remember his death.
