Review on Chapter 5 Connecting is more skill than natural talent

Key Points Review:

1. If you have an area of expertise and generously share it with others, you give peple reasons to respect you and develop a sense of connection with you.

Like Michael Jordan, people trust him for his expertise in basketball and therefore they buy products with his advertisement on it.

2. If you have made sacrifices, suffered tragedy, or overcome painful obstacles, many people will relate to you. And if you have been able ot remian positive yet humble in the midst of life's difficulties, others will admire you and be able to connect with you.

3. Charlie Wetzel's comment on John.

To connect with people, be yourself, at your best.

A. He prepares Throughly: John writes his outlines by hand with a four-color Bic pen, tapes his quotes into his outline, and reminds himself about personal stories by writting a word or two preceded by an asterisk. Whenever he travels, he carries about a dozen laminated cards with him, each with an outline for a speech that he could give at a moment's notice.

B. He Utilizes Humor.

C. He Focuses on Others. When he speaks, he meets and greets people beforehand. He speaks positively about his host or people has met in the audience.

D. When Charlie wrote books for John, he also first think of how to connect with the readers from a book's point of view.

Reflection on this Chapter

It is very interesting to know about John from Charlie's perspective and find the kind of efforts John put in order to become successful. I have also learn how to prepare for a publice speaking from Charlie's story about John. I found it is perticularly useful to prepare a laminated cards with a story or topic to back it up. So that is what I am going to do, to make a story book with the values and stories that I want to share with others so that they can learn and grow from it.
