基本意思是give an impression of留下…印象;证明;表明

Facts speak for themselves.事实本身就是很好的说明。

可以动用的名词很美:bridge

bridge a river, canal, ravine, etc 在河流﹑ 运河﹑ 深谷等上面架桥.

最近这个词出现比较多,复习:

I put her in the top rank of modern novelists. 我把她看做是当代第一流的小说家.

这句也可以更简:I rank her top novelist.

5.     the otherwise thick hair

英语中最简凝的词。

an otherwise logical mind. 在其他方面才有逻辑的头脑

his otherwise equals 在其他方面与他匹敌的人

6.     exudes strength and vigor

基本等于radiate洋溢

To exhibit in abundance:

a face that exuded self-satisfaction.一张洋溢着自满的脸

7.     which three one could argue to mean the same thing for English gentlemen in the 1800s

定语从句的which,可以直接which three,代表数量为三的先行词。例句没找到,retina都快掉出来了也没有翻出来一个,下次碰到时及时积累。

8.     The house nestles among a quarter-oval panel of firs at the foot of a mountain

精妙的好词:处于半隐蔽处,温暖舒适地容纳(像在巢中)

The village nestled at the foot of the hill. 那村庄位於山脚下.

The cat lay nestled in the cushions. 猫舒舒服服地卧在一堆垫子中

This cat-nestle sentence made my day.

9.     flung-open front gates

fling急速用力地放置、推动…(可以对自己下手)

He flung open the door. 他猛然推开了门.

She flung herself in front of a car. 她猛然冲到汽车前面.

10.  fenced in the front with horizontal rails

安的这个词用得太好了。


11.     braced between three posts

支撑、使稳固,希腊语的“臂”,怪不得embracer是拥抱。

平常经常听的“叉”开腿站稳

~ one's feet to keep from falling用力叉开两腿以免跌倒

12.     Adults tend to lump cheetahs and tigers into one kind

这个词有嫌弃的视觉感,虽然字典上是中性的。

混为一谈,视为同类

Can we lump all these items together as `incidental expenses'? 我们可否把这些项目都归在‘杂费’项内?

表达“有”,为什么自己想不起来。

正在积累名词+ed的结构

15.     running down the sides of his nose

补几个run的神奇的vt用法:

run可以是打量

哆嗦是run下来的

还可以run手指(捋头发、弹钢琴)

还可以run眼睛 (看书页)

20.  receding hairline,
