坚持英语学习打卡 之 翻译篇（14）

今日翻译打卡第14天，完成Unit 10英译汉部分。这篇文章属于散文，翻译时要注意透彻理解英文句意的基础上，尽量选用优美的中文语言，今天主要选取其中7个句子赏析。另外，关于散文的翻译，建议使用张培基先生的《英译中国现代散文选》。

1.I fancy, however, the new moon always comes as a surprise even to those who are familiar with her time-tables. And it is the same with the coming-in of spring and the waves of the flowers.

一般译法：然而，我觉得即使对于那些很熟悉月亮盈亏时间的人来说，新月的出现也是令人惊喜的。而春天的来临与花儿的盛放也是如此。

优质译法：然而我想，哪怕人把月亮盈亏时间表记得再熟，看见新月出现还是不免又惊又喜，春回大地，花开花落，也莫不如此。

技巧点拨：注意散文语言的优美，可以选用四字词语翻译。

2.We know that the blossom precedes and not succeeds the fruit of the apple-tree, but this does not lessen our amazement at the beautiful holiday of a May orchard.

一般译法：我们都知道苹果树先开花后结果，但是对于五月果园的盛况，我们依然会感到惊叹。

优质译法：我们知道苹果树先开花，后结果，可是五月一旦到来，果园里一片欢闹的花海，我们不是仍然惊为奇观吗？

技巧点拨：注意precede表示“在...之前”，succeed除了表示“成功”，还可以表示“继...之后”，orchard表示“果园”。

3.I have myself a capricious and leaking memory.

优质译法：我自己的记忆力也漏洞百出、不听使唤。

技巧点拨：注意capricious本意是“反复无常的，任性的”，此处注意意译。

4.It is as though each of us investigated and made his own only a tiny circle of facts. Knowledge outside the day’s work is regarded by most men as gewgaw.

优质译法：我们每个人似乎只对很小范围内的某几件事才真正下功夫去了解、弄清楚。大部分人把日常工作以外的一切知识统统当作花哨无用的玩意儿。

技巧点拨：注意gewgaw表示“华而不实的东西”，后半句注意被动句变成主动句。

5.One of the greatest joy known to man is to take such a flight into ignorance in search of knowledge.

优质译法：为求知而陷入无知，这是人类所欣赏的最大乐事之一。

6.We even become vain of our squirrel’s hoard of knowledge and regard increasing age itself as a school of omniscience.

优质译法：我们甚至像松鼠似的对自己小小的知识储存感到沾沾自喜，把与日俱增的年龄看作是培养无所不知的天然学堂。

技巧点拨：注意hoard表示“贮藏”, become vain of 表示“对...沾沾自喜”, omniscience表示“全知全能”，英美文学中有个omniscient narrative表示“全知叙事视角”，也就是上帝视角。

7.Socrates was famous for wisdom not because he was omniscient but because he realized at the age of 70 that he still knew nothing.

优质译法：苏格拉底之所以名垂后世，并非因为他无所不知，而是因为他到了七十高龄还能明白自己仍然一无所知。
