Mystery of the stolen paintings
不翼而飞的名画
Do you know Vincent van Gogh (梵高)? March 30 was the 167th birthday of this great artist. However, on that day, one of his paintings was stolen (被偷走) from a Dutch (荷兰的) museum. Beautiful paintings attract lots of people, including thieves. Let’s take a look at some famous art thefts around the world.
About the artist
Vincent van Gogh was a Dutch painter. His works are famous for their bright and wild colors. Van Gogh liked painting very much, but he only sold one work during his life.
Stolen on artist’s birthday
At about 3:15 am on March 30, a group of thieves broke into a museum in the Netherlands (荷兰). They smashed (打碎) through the glass door and took a painting by Vincent van Gogh. The painting was The Parsonage Garden at Nuenen in Spring 1884 (《纽恩南春天里的牧师花园》).
The museum was closed because of COVID-19 (新冠肺炎). So there was less security (保安) than usual. This might be why the painting was stolen. Now the police are searching for the thieves.
Missing from the Louvre
The Mona Lisa is perhaps the most famous painting in the world. Every day, thousands of people visit it in the Louvre (卢浮宫) in France. But did you know? The Mona Lisa was once stolen from the museum in 1911.
The thief was an Italian man. He used to work at the Louvre, so he knew the museum very well. One day in August, he hid in a closet (壁橱). He waited there until the museum was empty. Then, he took the painting off the wall, hid it under his coat and walked out. The thief took the painting back to Italy. The police caught him two years later. The Mona Lisa was returned to the Louvre.
About the artist
The Mona Lisa is by Leonardo da Vinci (达芬奇). Da Vinci was an Italian artist, inventor and scientist. He was very talented. Besides paintings, he also designed a helicopter, musical instruments (乐器), and more.
Crazy thieves
Look at this man. He is screaming on a bridge. He looks scared. It is The Scream (《呐喊》). It was painted by Edvard Munch (爱德华蒙克), a Norwegian (挪威的) artist.
February 12 was the opening day of the 1994 Winter Olympics in Norway. On that day, two thieves broke into a museum in Norway. They cut the wires (线) holding the painting to the wall and took it away. Then, they left a note reading “Thousand thanks for the bad security!” It only took the thieves less than a minute to steal the painting. But it took the police two years to find the thieves and send the painting back home.
About the artist
Edvard Munch was good at describing fear. Many scientists think he had bipolar disorder (躁郁症). Munch painted four different pictures of the screaming man. After one of them was stolen in 1994, another one was stolen in 2004.
It’s a disaster
Art theft is a disaster (灾难) for art and culture. Some paintings are damaged (被毁坏) or even remain (保持) missing forever after they are stolen. When thieves take paintings away from museums, people can’t enjoy them anymore.
