Measure Qomolangma
中国再次测量珠峰“身高”
During May, most places in China are warm. But Mount Qomolangma is still cold and covered with snow. At this time, 35 Chinese climbers are climbing the world’s tallest mountain. They are going to measure (测量) the height (高度) of the mountain.
In fact, China already measured the height of the mountain in 1975 (8,848.13 meters) and 2005 (8,844.43 meters). But the height can change as Earth’s plates (板块) move. As technology improves, people want to get more exact figures (数字).
However, measuring its height is not easy. The temperature there is -29 C, four degrees lower than in Antarctica (南极). The snow there is 4-5 meters thick and strong winds blow (吹) all the time. Drones (无人机) cannot fly there. Climbers has to carry scientific instruments (器材) to the world’s rooftop. To deal with the difficult conditions (条件), team members started training in January.
Despite (尽管) its many difficulties, the mountain is still worth (值得) measuring. An exact measurement can help to study plate movement, forecast (预报) earthquakes and prevent natural disasters (自然灾害).
How do they measure Qomolangma?
1. The climbing team takes their instruments to the top of the mountain.
2. They collect (收集) data (数据) there.
3. Scientists study the data and calculate (计算) the height of the mountain.
How do climbers live?
Where to sleep: four team members sleep in a tent (帐篷).
What to eat: three dishes and soup for each meal. Temperatures are low on the mountain, so it’s easy to keep meat fresh.
How to wash: to save fresh water, climbers rarely (很少) bathe or wash their faces.
