Waging war on HIV

2017-05-02

That’s when the pediatrician in training learned firsthand that with HIV, you’re fighting a battle on two fronts: you’re up against a vicious virus— and the stigma that allowed it to proliferate, unchecked, for so long. Gray decided to fight the virus and the silence around it through research. Thanks in part to her work on mother-to-child transmission, the number of babies born with HIV has dropped from 600,000 a year to 150,000. Now, she’s set her sights on a way to inoculate infants before they’re ever put at risk. Her ongoing HIV-vaccine study is the largest of its kind ever conducted in South Africa, and with it, Gray is once again doing her part to make sure that the science of HIV—and the conversation around it— never stops evolving.

Now 17, Gavin is the cherubic face of a reductive, dirty debate about trans people’s right to exist in public spaces without hostility, harassment and violence. His case, which remains ongoing in Virginia, has implications that extend far beyond bathrooms. It’s about a greater sense of belonging for us all—at school, at home and in our neighborhoods and places of work and worship. So many are made to feel as if they should hide, pretend or perish. Gavin’s refusal to be treated unjustly is an enduring reminder that we will not be stayed.

That’s the kind of person Barbara is: she gets things done, even when they seem impossible. Barbara grew up in one of the poorest neighborhoods in Boston, and decided to enter one of the most male-dominated fields in the world. Now she has seven restaurants, four James Beard Awards and a memoir. She creates opportunities for herself, even when it seems like they do not exist.

Never before had a mosquito bite been found to cause a birth defect, but after a string of troubling encounters with her patients, Dr. Celina Turchi knew something was wrong. An infectious-disease specialist in Recife, Brazil—which was the epicenter of the first major outbreak of Zika-associated microcephaly—Turchi worked around the clock, missing meals and sleep to figure out what was going on. She understood that this was a global crisis requiring global collaboration, so she reached out to experts from around the world, facilitated their work and collaboration in Brazil and openly shared what she and her colleagues were finding so that the world could learn about this unprecedented threat.

2017-05-02

what proportion of normal-appearing infected babies will have developmental problems; and, most important, how to prevent Zika-associated neurological damage. Her work and partnership with other scientists is bringing the world closer to answering those and other crucial questions.

Hamdi personifies the American Dream, showing that anyone arriving on U.S. shores with drive and intelligence can make it—and bring others along with him.

Because of their hard work, millions of people got off the sidelines, raised their voices and marched. The images of Jan. 21, 2017, show a diverse, dynamic America— striving for equality for all. The moment and movement mattered so profoundly because it was intersectional and deeply personal.

This represents a historic milestone for artificial intelligence. Demis is one of the leading scientists creating AI breakthroughs, with three Nature papers in the past two years.

2017-05-02

Every technology since fire has intertwined promise and peril. Demis has been a leader in establishing ethical guidelines to keep AI accountable. If we achieve this vision, it’s likely Demis will have played a large part.

I first became aware of Bob Ferguson, the Washington State attorney general, when he spoke up for a local gay couple who was denied service by a florist in 2013. But the name didn’t embed itself in my mind until this year, when he filed the lawsuit that wound up halting Donald Trump’s first travel ban targeting people from several Muslim-majority countries.

2017-05-02

As that scene played out, I was reminded of when I was 5 years old and imprisoned behind American barbed-wire fences in a Japanese-American internment camp in Arkansas. Every morning at the school, in a black, tar-paper barrack, we began the day by pledging allegiance to the flag: “With liberty and justice for all.”

Bob Ferguson clearly believes everyone deserves those guarantees, no matter their background. That is, after all, what makes us Americans. We are a country of immigrants. And it was thrilling to watch him speak out in the court of law in order to ensure a better and truer democracy.

Chance upends expectations about what artists, especially hip-hop artists, can do. He streams his albums instead of selling them. He makes music from an unapologetically inspiring and Christian perspective— music that transcends age, race and gender. He gives back to his Chicago community. And he does it all as an independent artist, without the support of a label.

I’m glad Chance followed his dreams. I hope he always does.

Human beings have long wondered whether they are alone in the universe. Now we are closer than ever to getting an answer. That’s thanks in large part to the astronomers who are searching for exoplanets—planets orbiting other stars— that could be home to life.

Silicon Valley needs more venture capitalists like Kirsten, who not only hires women (her firm, Forerunner Ventures, employs a mostly female team) but also seeks out women-led businesses to invest in, from Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James to Tyler Haney’s Outdoor Voices. It’s not about parity for parity’s sake. It’s about well-rounded decisionmaking leading to better outcomes.

It is that authenticity and vulnerability that endear her to us.

When someone is as unique and unboxable as Sarah Paulson, it takes time for creative spaces to open up that are large and porous enough to hold the depth and complexity of her talent.

2017-05-02

I, too, have had the privilege of working with Sarah. When I first met her, on the set of Carol, I was floored by her buoyancy, her irreverence, her left-field sense of humor and her devotion to her craft. You enter a scene with Sarah and it’s game on. She brings with her, in work as in life, the sense that anything is possible. Anything.

You might think, Everyone listens. In fact, women like this are rarely heard, and few listen like Melinda. She listens with her complete attention and total empathy. Then she figures out how to use what she’s learned to make the world a more equitable place.

And with the launch of her new organization, Pivotal Ventures, Melinda has yet another avenue to effect meaningful change.

I first met Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos in 1992 when he was Minister of Trade. Appointed as his adviser, I soon realized that he had set himself up to an impossible mission.

2017-05-02

While Colombia was waging a dire war against the drug cartels, Santos was looking beyond. Amid death, corruption and political divisions, I remember him saying, “We need to add, not subtract.”

2017-05-02

This could well be the parable of his life. Throughout his career, he carefully avoided graduating his adversaries into enemies— and his enemies into bitter foes.

2017-05-02

Last year Santos received the Nobel Peace Prize for negotiating an end to the Colombian government’s 50-year war with FARC. And while I watched him accept it, I remembered the words he said to me back in 1992. Indeed he had been adding— bringing together friends and enemies to achieve what once seemed impossible: peace.

2017-05-02

I pray that we in Colombia will live up to his legacy.

The same goes for the church Francis leads. Before being elected Pope, Francis gave a speech to his fellow Cardinals warning against becoming a “self-referential” church, rather than one that goes out of itself to the margins of society to be with those who suffer. That is where God is working in the world and where he calls us to be. This has rung especially true this year, as Francis has spoken out on the need to welcome refugees amid a global crisis.

But because bribes big and small grease China’s wheels of commerce up and down the line, the drive has hit consumption, at least the conspicuous kind, as many people hide how cash-rich they are. There’s a political impact too: boss Xi can take out rivals under the cover of fighting graft. Wang’s fearsome, and feared, offensive has effectively made him China’s second most powerful individual. At home and abroad, Wang is known as a straight shooter. Today, no Chinese wants to be in his sights.

After five years in power, there are no signs that the mercurial and corpulent Kim is mellowing.

2017-05-02

He is widely believed to have ordered the recent murder of his half brother Kim Jong Nam with a VX nerve agent in the Kuala Lumpur airport. One of the two female assassins, perhaps reflecting Kim’s reported sense of humor, wore a T-shirt emblazoned with the text lingo LOL.

2017-05-02

Initial hopes that the Swisseducated, third-generation dictator would be a reformer and accede to international demands to abandon his nuclear program have long died along with his victims. There are no good options for stopping Kim, but cooperating with China and reinforcing alliances with Japan and South Korea is a start.

David Adjaye is one of the great architectural visionaries of our time. His work—deeply rooted in both the present moment and the complex context of history— has envisioned new ways for culture to be represented and reflected in the built environment. Nowhere is this more evident than in his recent triumph on the National Mall.

THE 2017 TIME 100

2017-05-03

OUR ANNUAL LIST OF THE 100 MOST Influential People explores the intersection of accomplishment and renown. As in years past, this year’s list includes Presidents and Prime Ministers, CEOs and celebrities—but they are joined by others of less fame but great force, in the power of their inventions, the scale of their ambitions, the genius of their solutions to problems that no one before them could solve.

“Oftentimes, the planets we discover are just numbers on a computer screen,” says the NASA scientist. “But when artists render them, as one did here, it brings them to life, sparking our imagination and reminding us that these worlds actually exist in the galaxy. As I stare at Kepler-10b’s lava seas, I marvel at the narrow range of conditions that give rise to a world like Earth

Pokémon cards

“During my childhood, I played male Pokémon characters because I didn’t have space to be a boy. It allowed me to be one of the guys,” says the transgender-rights activist. “My struggles with mental health really intensified at 11 or 12. During early puberty, I didn’t see a future for myself at all. I was positive I was going to be dead soon. So I thought, Why do I keep these things? I’m not going to need them anyway. I fell into a fairly significant depression and got rid of everything Pokémon I had. Depression has been in my life forever and it never goes away completely, but the worst years were 12 to 16. The only thing that has aided my depression has been transitioning. A few years ago, I got a pack of Pokémon cards in the mail. It’s been extremely therapeutic to go back to that. It’s about creating a space where I can be myself, just Gavin, not G.G. v. Gloucester County School Board.”

THE 2018 TIME 100

2017-05-03

ALTHOUGH I HELPED COME UP WITH the idea for the TIME 100 (along with the slightly less popular Get 100 Famous People to Draw Turkey Hands for Thanksgiving), the editors of this magazine have never let me sit in on one single TIME 100 meeting, ever. This is likely due to a deep-seated prejudice against having someone interrupt every debate over a world leader’s relative influence with “Let’s ask him for a turkey hand!”

So I’ve moved on to a more important task: guessing next year’s TIME 100. TIME, after all, can use its global reporting team and wellconnected, handsome essayists to find the influencers bubbling toward the top for next year.

2017-05-03

AT FIRST, trying to guess the 2018 TIME 100 was hard, since not only has 2018 not happened, but I haven’t been paying much attention to 2017. I started my list (which you can read at time.com/Joel2018) by jotting down the obvious, like Anthony Weiner, who is definitely not done messing stuff up with selfies of his private parts.
