Apps can be both gorgeous and not well thought through

Litely- Litely is a photo-editing app with film inspired filters and tones.

Litely——

Litely

Litely

Litely’s visual design is stunning, the UI details are amazing. However, some of the gestures implemented into the app are subpar. When it comes to using gestures, they need to be easy to perform. Gestures don’t necessarily need to be intuitive; it’s okay to demonstrate the various gestures your app can support. Yet, at the end of the day they can’t be some weird crazy finger yoga either.

When you are viewing a photo and would like to preview the difference of before and after you can do so by tapping the picture with two fingers. This is bad for a few reasons. Holding down two fingers to the screen makes the hand block the screen significantly. Additionally, the convention set by Instagram – which has been adapted by other apps like VSCO – dictates a single finger tap. Moreover, there is nothing to indicate the use of two fingers; there was no demo, this gesture was found by accident.

The second offense happens when you are trying to edit a horizontal or square picture. In this case, by default, you are zoomed into the picture. You can only see part of it. In edit mode, you can fiddle with the way you hold your phone to move around and see the rest of the image; this is inconvenient and annoying. You can actually zoom out of the image if you tap on it – with one finger. Again, this gesture can be discovered by accident, there is no demo. When it comes to gestures that help user use your app, don’t hide them.

Take away:Gestures are not obvious so keep to conventions if you can and make sure you point them out if they are not typical gestures, after all.
