Neurologist Dr. Tara Swart said in the Fast Company that unlike athletes , those who engaged in intellectual work usually did not eat their meals seriously. That is wrong, because the brain needs a proper supply in order to operate in the best state. Dr J Walter shared five recommendations to make the brain in the best state:

First,drink plenty of water. Everyone knows that, but few people can do it. Dr JWalter introduced that a person with every 30 pounds (about 27.2 jin) of weight needs 500 ml of water to meet the need of the brain ,and a person who has a weight of 150 pounds, needs to consume at least 2750 milliliters of water everyday. This is the lowest amount required to avoid damaging memory, attention,decision-making ability. The study found that even 1% to 3% of the waterdeficit also had a major impact on memory, attention and decision making. Water helps the free flow of chemical and electrical signals between cells, and isessential for the efficient functioning of the brain.

Second, drink less alcohol. Alcohol can cause the hormone cortisolin the body to rise, and cortisol, also known as stress hormone, produces more cortisol when people face stress. Many people like to drink a glass of wine before going to bed and have a relax. This may lead to the opposite effect.

Third,eat more vegetables, legumes and grains. These foods which are rich in magnesium will inhibit the release of cortisol. In addition, when we feel stressed,magnesium in our bodies is being consumed rapidly.

Fourth, eat salmon and mackerel, for the reason that they are rich in unsaturated fatty acid Omega3, vitamin B12 and protein. What’smore, these nutrients can contribute to the growth of brain cells, and can prevent cognitive decline.

Fifth, resting more often will make our bodies feel less physically hunger and thirst. When you feel uncomfortable, hungry or thirsty,your brain will return to the "survival mode", which shifts bloodfrom the controlled cortex to the area that controls basic survival. So when you're hungry or lack of water, basic clothing, commuting and daily work are okay foryou, but the brain's ability to solve complex problems and find creative ideas can be affected.
