Today is Saturday.

The bells were still ringing and a drum was making a rattling noise. Sam felt cold and afraid. Captain Parker, the head of the minutemen, told them to line up near the meeting house. Sam saw his friend John Allen who looked the way Sam felt, which made Same feel better. Sam asked Allen why the British were coming. Allen told him they were going to get the guns and powders hidden in Concord and they had to come past their town. Slowly it began to get light and the bells and drum had stopped. It was so quiet that Sam could hear the birds twittering in the trees. He could smell the blossom of apple trees and feel the wet dew on the grass. Sam thought the British might go another way but it was not true. Then it was daylight and men began to relax, talking with each other, yawning, Sam and John playing a kind of knife game on the ground. Sam hoped that he had had breakfast at home. And suddenly John whispered to Sam, "Listen!"
