Tomorrow Shining Ahead系列——Penance(忏悔) after 50 years

It is in a little bookshop in the city of Lichfield(利奇菲尔德市),England.

The floor has just been swept and the shutter(百叶窗)taken down from the one small window.

At a small table near the door,a feeble(瘦弱),white-haired old man is making up some packages of books.

He sits down and rests himself, leaning(支)his elbows upon the table.

The exertion brings on another fit of coughing .

He casts a beseeching glance at his son, hoping that he will relent at the last moment.(他向儿子投去恳求的目光,希望儿子在最后一刻会发发慈悲。)

The stage comes rattling down(沿街) the street.  coach(马车) chaise(两轮马车)

The people who have wares to sell huddle under the eaves and in the stalls and booths that have roofs above them.(卖东西的人纷纷挤在屋檐下,挤在有顶棚的摊子和棚子里)

His face is seamed and scarred ,and he makes strange grimaces as he clambers out of the chaise. He wheezes and puffs as though afflicted with asthma. He walks with the aid of a heavy stick.

With slow but ponderous strides he enters the market place.(他步履缓慢而沉重地走进了市场)

He looks at the little stalls ranged along the walls of the market place.(他看着沿市场墙边摆的一些小货摊)

Clergy of the county.(郡的牧师)

He bows his head and clasps his hands.(他低下头,紧握双手)

Some laugh as the rain runs in streams down his scarred old cheeks.(有些人看到雨水从他带有疤痕的老脸上留下,就笑出了声)

Boys hoot at him.(孩子们对他发出了嘲笑声) compassionate(同情)

He is drenched and chilled.(他被雨淋透了,冷飕飕的)

At length there is a lull in the storm . The birds are chirping among the housetops.(最后暴风雨暂时停息。

He lifts his eyes reverently for a moment , and then, with a lordly, lumbering motion, walks down the street to meet the chaise which is ready to return to Lichfield.

I tacitly refuse to oblige or obey my father. The thought of the pain which I must have caused him has haunted me ever since . To do away the sin of that hour, I this morning went in a chaise to Uttoxeter and did do penance publicly before the stall which my father had formerly used.

The great man bows his head upon his his hands and sobs.
