Defoe is notable for being one of the earliest proponents of the novel, as he helped to popularize the form in Britain, and is even referred to by some as among the founders of the English novel. He was also a pioneer of economic journalism.

Defoe’s famous novel <>, published in 1719, tells of a man’s shipwreck on a deserted island and his subsequent adventures. He wrote Crusoe in the style of social realism in which he is the observant reporter, historian, humorist, and grand story teller. This novel was partly based on the actual deeds of Alexander Selkirk, an 18th-century Scottish sailor who spent almost five years alone on a desert island. It is one of the most popular adventure novels in all literature. This novel writes in the first person, which makes readers of this book have this feeling of listening to his own story and share with his joy and sorrow.

At the beginning of this novel, before Crusoe begins his story, the hero tells us a little about himself. “My father did well in his business and I went to a good school. He wanted me to get a good job and live a quietcomfortable life. But I didn't want that. I wanted adventure and an exciting life, ‘I want to be a sailor and go to sea’”. Then the hero begun his first sea journey but in another sea journey to Africa with his friends, they met a terrible storm and the shipwreck, and the final worse result is his new life on an unknown island alone. He is once distressed, desperate, ecstatic, easy, contented, pious, and horrified and so forth but never deserts his wish to survive. He builds himself a hut, grows his own food, and becomes self-sufficient. After 23 years he meets with a group of cannibals and rescues one of their prisoners, a young native he calls Friday. Crusoe and his man Friday become close friends, and when they are finally rescued four years later, both return to England.

This novel is famous for its lovely details and its expression of belief in man’s ability when left alone in nature. It powerfully arouses people’s resolution deep inside and incredible courage and will to face hardships. In God we trust, we are thus blessed with might to struggle against anything. There’s God endures human being with great strength.
