Envy vs. Jealousy: What's the Difference?

Envy is a feeling of desiring and wanting to possess something that someone else has that we do not have.

The object of envy might be wealth, a particular possession (such as a classic car), a physical attribute such as strength or beauty, and emotional quality such as charisma, or a social status such as popularity or fame.

Jealousy is a feeling of possessiveness about keeping what we already have. It usually refers to a person or relationship that I (the one feeling jealousy) already has.

So the feeling of jealousy is most commonly about situations where someone is hitting on your spouse or sexual partner. Nevertheless, just as with envy, one can be jealous about any possession or attribute that one has.

Examples:

Your girlfriend might surely be jealous when you talk to  other girls.

You envy your room mate, who has a beautiful girlfriend.
