　　Everything is relative, cultural differencebeing no exception. Culture, as the total pattern of human behaviorand its products, oversteps geographical limits and historicalconditions in many ways, and it is characterized by its strongpenetrativeness and fusibility.

　　The advancement of the globalized economyand the rapidity and ease of modern communication, transportation,and mass media have resulted in an ever increasing exchange betweencultures, unprecedented in scale, scope, and speed. Consequently,an increase in universality and a reduction in difference betweencultures is an inevitable trend. It is no surprise to see phenomenacharacteristic of one culture existing in another. As a result,some people even fear that the world will become a dull place whenall the different nationalities behave exactly alike.Nevertheless,the “cultural sediment” formed through long-range accumulationis not to be easily removed, and the cultural tradition handed downfrom generation to generation shows great consistency andcontinuity. The cultures of different regions and nations stillhave their own distinctive peculiarities, and thereforesignificance still needs to be attached to the study of theindividualities of different cultures against the background oftheir universality.

　　By and large, linearity and circularity canbe used to indicate the major difference between Western andChinese cultures. “Western culture” here is a general term,putting aside its interior regional diversities in order tocontrast it with Chinese culture. A circle is a round enclosure. Aline is a narrow continuous mark. The contrast between thelinearity of Western culture and the circularity of Chinese cultureembodies itself in such aspects as worldview, core value, outlookon time, and mode of thinking.

   Chinese students are taught that all questions have but one right answer and there is little room for debate.North American education needs to move away from an emphasis on fun, flexibility and individual learning styles.Instead, it has to shift towards a more strict, disciplined teaching environment that math and science, in particular, seem to demand.This shift can be discerned even in Canada, where there are no college entrance exams, and where, standardized testing, memorization and rote learning have long been frowned upon.
