Portlet or component that can be uninstalled or stoped in WebSphere Portal

There are three different kind of applications / portlets that can be either disabled or removed from WebSphere Portal depending on the usage scenario of the Portal. While some portlets can be removed that are optional, administration portlets or portlets that are updated during the fix pack install should only be disabled.

1. The following is a list of portlets that are safe to uninstall :

FrequentUsers.war
WelcomePortlet.war
xslt.war
lwp.portlets.calendar.war
lwp.portlets.mailbox.war
dominowebaccess.war
LotusDocViewer.war
dcomdoc.war
notes2.war
QuickplaceInline.war
SametimeContactList.war
LotusMyTeamWorkplaces.war
wc.war
SametimeWhoIsHere.war
myList.war
reminder.war
newsgroup.war
sql.war
bannerad.war
Exchange3.war
Exchange2003.war
worldclock.war
QuickLinks.war
ServletInvoker.war
JspServer.war
FileServer.war
docviewer.war
csv.war
MarketWatch.war

To make it easier, there is an XML script attached that you can refer to for this applications. This script can be modified to delete all of these applications in one XMLAccess step if you prefer :

2. Applications / Portlets that can stopped / disabled :

The remaining applications that you will not be using should be stopped or disabled instead of uninstalled. You should not uninstall any other default portlet that is not included in the list above. Instead, you should simply stop the applications that are not needed in case the underlying code is needed for other operations in the portal. It is possible to stop all of the bundled portlets and administer WebSphere Portal entirely by commands using the XML Configuration interface (XMLAccess), but if you wish to administer your portal using the administrative portlets, only a subset of the default portlets can be safely stopped.

You should stop only specific portlets depending on your needs. If you intend to use the features provided by any of the portlets listed below, you should not stop them. You can permanently disable specific applications to prevent them from starting upon every restart of the server. To disable, you must go to each application under Enterprise Applications, select Target Mapping -> the cluster/server name, and then deselect the "Enabled" box. Save and restart. Follow this link for related information.

Below is a list of bundled portlets that can be stopped or disabled. Stopping these will not affect the administration of the portal from a Web browser.

Blurb.war
SpellCheckerService.war

Note: You can also possibly improve server startup performance and memory usage by disabling applications that may not be needed in your environment. For example, possibly Composite Applications and Templates (also known as "CAI/TAI") and Workplace Web Content Management™ (WCM). These applications are:

LWP_CAI
LWP_TAI
content_j2ee
dmdesktop
icmjcrear
ilwwcm_wcmsearchseed
wcm
