inv.to talk to a lot of different people in a group, especially at a party

eg. He circulated among several famous people in the party so that everyone thought he is one with grear abolity.

other meanings: inv./v. to move around within a system, or to make something do this: 
  inv. if information, facts, ideas etc circulate, they become known by many people: 
  v. to send goods, information etc to people: 

2. he described with gusto the joy of weaving the m through his work.

  if you do something with gusto, you do it with a lot of eagerness and energy: 
  eg. He draw a blueprint of his future with gusto as if he will achieve it tomorrow.

3. this is the personal transation

[countable] a business deal or action, such as buying or selling something: 
[uncountable] the process of doing business: 
eg. Transactions take place everyday,  which lead to progress for people and socirty.

此处有疑惑,transaction除了交易外,是不是有另外一种理解?

4.  understand clotted language of everyday Amercan commerce

  inv./v if a liquid such as blood or milk clots, or if something clots it, it becomes thicker and more solid (clotted cream)
  n. a thick almost solid mass formed when blood or milk dries

eg. Reading a clotted essay on the newpaper and having a clotted breakefast, he feels like there is  a clotted blood in his heart.

5. such as this blackout order of 1942

a situation in which particular pieces of news or information are not allowed to be reported

eg. As the crisis worsened, the authorities imposed a news blackout.

other meanings: 1. a period of darkness caused by a failure of the electricity supply SYN power cut
  2. a period during a war when all the lights in a town or city must be turned off
  3. if someone has a blackout, they suddenly become unconscious

Thoughts

读大学的时候就听说这本书,当时下载在kindle上,看了一小部分,没有看完,有点遗憾。看到Eric11月跟我们一起都这本书,当时就下单买了纸质版的书,报名参加读书会,这一次一定要读完。正如Eric所说,也许并不能立即提高写作,但至少能够提高鉴赏水平。最巧的是,读第一章我就发现读书时曾做过一篇阅读理解,就是节选自这章!


It's impossible for a muddy thinker to write good English.

先要清晰地思考,方能清晰地写作。平时一直强调要头脑清晰,但写作是往往跟书中的业余作家一样,只顾享受行云流水的快感,没顾上思考写作。结果写完后给别人看反响平平,数日后自己阅读发现描述不清楚,有的拖沓,有的交代不够。

Thinking clearly is a conscious act that writers must force on themselves, as if they were working on any other project that requires logic.

所以,如果要真正提高写作,得逼着自己思考。也许真正思考过后写出的文字不仅更清楚,还会更有力量。
