1. General description of my works
It’s an overall demonstration of FIFA World Cup, showing aspects on and off the court. There are three unwritten parts constructing the whole gallery, the overall description of World Cup, situation of each edition and 2018 introduction. Image names are as follow:
(1) Overall
i. Award introduction
Including World Cup, Golden Boot, Golden ball and Golden Grove
ii. Entry frequency (1930-2014)
World Cup entry times of teams around the globe since the first edition in 1930
iii. Top 10 team participating the most game
Could be the best teams in FIFA World Cup history
(2) By edition
iv. Top 5 scoring team’s goal(1950-2014)
Each edition’s goals of five teams scoring the most.
v. Average spectator per game(1974-2014)
One game’s spectators in the stadium of each editions
vi. Sponsor‘s number & country (1982-2018)
See which countries’ enterprises put the most effort on the sponsorship
(3) 2018 Russian
vii. Team's affiliated confederation, championship experience & shirt sponsor
Confederation’s and sponsor’s relationship with qualifiedteams and teams with champion experience
viii. Referee’s affiliated confederation
See which confederation’s judges take the most part
ix. Team's transaction value
Including a Top 10 list of team’s total value and a comparisonof value per player between the highest and lowest team
x. Winning percentage
See which teams will be more likely to qualify for knockout stage and win the champion
2. Procedure of making a data visualization
After finishing the work, I summarized my 7-step producing process.
(1) Set overall goal
It’s the easiest but also the most significant one. The meaning and difficulty of the plan should be considered. After setting the goal, don’t go too far or too narrow.
(2) Find the data
The data could be from many kinds of source: dataset download,copying from article, data mining… Usually, inspiring data is hard to directly taken down from the internet. Try to collect as accurately as possible. Authorized organization should be the No.1 choice of data source.
(3) Interpret the data
With data in my hand, there are some ways to tell the story.Straightly use it? Select some part of it? Make connection with other data? Don’t restrict the mind.
(4) Edit the data
Most data has some stuff that may lead to error. Thus, cleaning is an automatic part before drawing even if there is no fault in it. Excel’s function like Trim and Substitute is the fundamental tool.
(5) Make visualization chart
Excel and Dydata help me a lot. However, I think the best visualization player doesn’t only rely on other’s software of website. Original system is necessary for unlimited work.
(6) Paint the chart
Art work could be left out for saving time. But I want to have a try, for it’s always more impressive to add more painting into the programmed chart. Here I mainly design in Photoshop with some icons.
(7) Check the picture
Finally, check the image to see it’s correct not. Some clear mistakes could be easily seen at the first time.
3. The most valuable element in data visualization
For me, it’s the idea to find and interpret the data.
Valuable data or information can draw people’s attention even if there’s no visualization. To some extent, the value of a visualization depends on its raw material. It’s vital to dig deep, and be imaginative to organize the information. I think I should cultivate those key abilities first, then pay attention to usage of each chart, technology, art and so on.
To sum up, I have a better understanding of data visualization’s nature – a stretch of story telling.
