On Oct.27th, 2018, a training was made for Ningbo Tianyi Youth TMC by Frank Song, ACS/ALB, Y2 Area Director, 2018-2019, D85 TTT program team 3.
According to Evaluation Criteria, here are my comments. Just trying to evaluate by myself.
Here we go.
Training content was well prepared, this kind of topic had been practised for at least 3 times by now. This time in Ningbo Tianyi Youth Club training, there were many laughs during the training, and attendees participated happly and voluntarily.
The purpose of the training was helping the audiences to organize speech in a logical way so that they can organize their speech fast and easily. Frank used the Presentation Pyramid's Purpose Statement with the definition and three explanations. For three explanations also contained one to three supporting points for each. These ideas were from the Base Camp Manager, Pathways Project level 1, also CC manual project 3 and 7, www.toastmasters.org.
About the activities, there were warming ups and group practices.
For warming ups, there were three rounds, Idiom connect, idiom connect of two words each, and table topic two person in one word each time. Idiom connect, this game was very popular in Chinese especially in school. After the first round, trainer asked how we can do it well. Trainees said well prepared, knowledgeble will do,etc. After the second round, trainer asked the same question as round one, how we can do it well. Trainees said quick response, mentioned the word which was familiar will do, etc. And after the third round, trainer still asked the same question how we can do it well. This time, trainees answered the very answer which trainer wanted most: logic! The purpose of these three round activists was let them speak out the word logic, also, brought them joy, and engaged everyone, forced them to participate.
About the Presentation Material, PPT was mainly used, and followed the PPT rules strictly, One Point One Slide, Font size big enough, Font type regularly, no strange type nor exaggerated animation.
For one point one slide, less is better principle, Frank did a good job. For example, to display three explanations of logic, there were three lines, and one would be color faded when next one showed up. It demonstrated the key point while trainer was talking about at that time. And trainees' attention was focused accurately.
Font size was big enough for those trainees who sit at back, and trainees took pictures from the PPT from time to time, and there were no such kind of awkwardness nor strangeness when they watched the PPT.
About the Delivery, for almost 50 mins, trainees were all listening, making notes, joining the activities, interacting and laughing. There were hardly no one got bord to play with moblie phone. There's only one guy apologized about using his phone at one time, because his boss had something to discuss with him during the training.
Frank chatted with trainees at beginning about how long it would take them to prepare a speech. Frank even chatted with them before the training about whether gave them the training with suit on or off. Atmosphere was very friendly.
Frank told them the story about his club member of preparing the speech, however, it was only something but not a complete story I think. Can do better next time.
For showing vulnerability or humility, Frank didn't do this part. He didn't tell the trainees that he used to prepare a speech with 5 months, some kind of true stories like that. If this story can be added, it would be better. The fact was, Frank forgot to tell, this story also was the vulnerability part.
About Ask & Listen, Frank did a good job. He asked questions were all very easy and on purpose. While trainees were answering, Frank was listening and memorizing, for mentioning them at the right time as the summary, and also was used in activities.
About trainer "forced" audiences participation, Frank also did a good job. Many of them said time flew very fast, even the timer forgot to show the green card and yellow card.
Some advices:
1. Try to tell a good story at very beginning next time. It will attract peoples' attention, make them fully involved.
2. Add some pictures in PPT, pictures can bring them feelings, make them understand and remember the key points more easily.
3. Practise more, so that time could be controled even better. The Training was asked to be in 45 mins, but the actual time was 49. Question time was postponed, and the regular meeting after training was also postponed.
Luckly, I took part in the meeting after my training, and won Best Individual Evaluator and Best Table Topic.
Welcome you to leave your messages or comments, any ideas or questions just let me know.
Thanks.
