The development of Buddhist architecture in China can be traced back to the time when Buddhism was first introduced into China during Han dynasty. It was also in this period that Buddhism began to localized, showcasing the architectural aesthetics and culture of China.

Including temple, pagoda and grotto, Buddhist architecture is regarded as a great artistic treasure house combining calligraphy, sculptures and painting.

Unlike Christianity in western countries, Buddhism doesn't dominate mainstream social ideology in China.

Although China and western world advocated that the Devine power of the King, the west emphasized the charismatic nature of power, whereas  the power of the emperor was prioritized in China.

This discrepancy can be demonstrated in their architectures: for a long time, temples and churches dominated in the Western while religious buildings were overshadowed by palaces and capital cities in China.
