“严加控制”、“加大监管力度”，这类动作是各类政府公文里的高频词，今天这篇文章收集一些经济学人中出现的此类表达，建议大家收藏起来，批量记忆，不时温习。

rein in
在最近一篇关于中国金融体系的文章中，有一句：
Regulators are also reining in China’s once-booming world of shadow banking.监管机构也开始对一度大肆扩张的影子银行严加控制。
rein in表示control, 宾语也可以是开支。比如最近是翻译淡季，没啥活，要控制开支，to rein in spending.

tighten one's grip on sth.
在一篇关于中国房地产市场的文章中，作者是这样写的：
The statement triggered a new round of concerns among investors that Beijing may further tighten its grip on the country's property market in the coming months. 这份声明引起了投资者的新关切，他们担心北京可能在未来数月加强对房地产市场的管控。
grip也可以表示control，比如铁腕控制 keep/have an iron grip on sth.，严格控制 a tight/firm/strong grip on sth., 加大控制 tighten/strengthen/step up one's grip on。
放松控制呢？动词换为loosen, relax即可。

greater oversight of sth.
之前两个说的都是动词词组，这里说个名词词组。
“加大”这样的动词可以转化为形容词比较级，加大监管力度，也就是用程度更深的监管，比如NPR之前有篇文章：
Obama implored Congress to close the much-maligned Guantanamo Bay detention center in Cuba and pledged to allow greater oversight of the drone program.
类似这种将“加大”、“改善”等动作翻译成形容词比较级的案例比比皆是，比如经济学人：
One source of improvement lies in the more efficient use of crops to feed animals.提高家畜饲料作物的利用效率可以改善这一情况。
more efficient use，更高效的利用，也就是提高利用效率。
The overwhelming good news is that storms and flooding have caused far fewer deaths in recent decades, thanks to better warning systems and the construction of levees, ditches and shelters. 一个重要的好消息就是，最近几十年，由于改善了预警系统，并修建了防洪堤、下水道以及避灾所，暴风雨和洪水导致的死亡人数显著减少。
far fewer deaths, 死亡人数少得多，也就是死亡人数显著减少，better warning systems，更好的预警系统，也就是改善了预警系统。
刚刚撇了一眼这句话的来源文章，讲的是洪水对美国造成的影响，标题是Judgement Day，太妙了。最后的审判日，出自圣经故事，上帝用洪水毁灭最后的人类。这个洪水，在圣经里是Deluge，有没有觉得很熟悉？
这个词后来引申为我们今天看到的“大量”、“涌出”，比如：
a deluge of complaints 纷至沓来的投诉
He was deluged with phone calls from friends and colleagues, congratulating him.朋友和同事纷纷来电向他表示祝贺。
这个词还有个典故，After us, the Deluge. “我们之后，洪水滔天”，据说语出路易十五的情妇兼政治顾问蓬巴杜夫人，暗指法国暗藏的深层社会危机。
楼歪了，一巴掌正回来。

get tough on
take a tough line/approach
“严加控制”也可以用类似于“严格严厉”的词的比较级来表示，比如get tough on environmental pollution, 还有take a tough line这样表示“采取严厉手段”的相关表达。以下两个例句均来自经济学人：
But in the past few months it has taken a harder line and pressed on with pollution controls, hitting coalminers, cement-makers, paper mills, chemical factories, textile firms and more. 但在过去几个月里，政府加大控制力度，坚定实施治污措施，煤矿、水泥厂、造纸厂、化工厂、纺织厂等都受到了冲击。
The government attributes its election victory in April to Mr Berlusconi's pledge toget tough on crime.四月的选举大获全胜，政府认为这要归功于贝卢斯科尼对严厉打击犯罪活动的承诺。

play hardball
这个词可以表示态度强硬，采取强硬的手段，主要是用在政治和商业领域。比如：
The next Irish government may look at Iceland and decide to play hardball with Europe. 下届爱尔兰政府也许会仿照冰岛，对欧洲采取强硬立场。
至于其他大家基本都能想到的“控制”的单词，比如control, stifle, check, hold/keep in check, suppress, limit, restrict, curb, contain等，比较简单，也很常用，此处就不再赘述例句啦，到处都是呢。
总结一下，可以表示“严加控制”的花式表达可以有：
