读书笔记-all the light we cannot see

I finally finished the book, and it took me almost 1 and a half month. This book is written by Anthony Doerr and won a Pulitzer Prize in 2021. A lot of bloggers recommended this one, so I picked it up and spent quite a time reading it. This book tells the fate of two people who were little child during the Second World War.

The main plot was happened  during that terrible time. The hero and the heroin were a orphan from Germany and a blind girl from France. Although with different background, one is called invader and another is victim, as ordinary people they almost shared the same fate. It seems it is impossible to connect these two people together, but it is the transmitter that intertwined their lives together. It is the transmitter that changed the boy’s life and saved the blind girl’s life. The little boy, Werner, showed great talent in science and repaired an old-fashioned and broken receiver from a deserted house. Through this little machine the boy had the chance to expose himself to outer world, acquire some basic knowledge about physics and listen the channel hosted by the blind girl’s great-uncle, all of which was forbidden for a boy raised in orphanage. Because his outstanding ability in science, he was able to attend the military academy, joined the army, and finally saved the girl’s life.

The book shows the devastating impact of war on the lives of ordinary people. The most memorable scene is in the military academy, when the best friend of Werner, Freddy a kind boy and a bird lover, was bullied by other students, Werner didn’t stand out and protect his friend because of cowardice. But Freddy totally understood him and tried to stay away from him in order to keep him safe.

All the light we cannot see is a thought-provoking book. No matter where you are from, the aggressor country or the one being invaded, or no matter who you are, the soldier or the average person, you are  the victim. The war will have huge impact for almost the rest of you life.
