这部片子以前看过一次，有一段时间还把主人公跳探戈的舞曲《一步之遥》作为手机铃声，因为实在太优美高亢而又忧伤了。若干年后再看时，开头大学生们的闹剧也没有让我想起主人公是谁，发生了什么，直到年轻的高中生查理来到主人公弗兰克的外甥女家时，我隐约想起了有一位脾气暴躁的中校需要照顾。之后发生了什么又是一片空白。直到博德高中因为学生恶作剧而召开听证会，镜头摇到恶作剧目击者之一——富家子弟乔治和他的父亲时，我又想起来中校弗兰克似乎来到这里来帮助了查理，毕竟查理势单力薄。说这些不过是想说明当年看片子是多么草率和无知，到了今天才看出一些深意来。
弗兰克是一个非常戏剧的人物，从他身上有种种对立的特质。他是粗鲁的，查理来面试时、去大哥家见最后一面时他的不得体的语言、下流的玩笑都令人难以接受；可他又是优雅的，外出时对自己的着装要求整洁笔挺、带特定的徽章，订的酒店、车和女伴都是最高级的，盲跳探戈也如行云流水、百看不厌。他是刻薄的，言语极具侮辱性，傲慢无礼，目中无人；可他又是体贴细腻的，时不时地关注到查理未说的心事，给他一些在冷酷世界生存的提醒。他是强硬、智慧的，什么都要听他的安排，什么问题都能搞定；可他又是软弱无助的，在酒店的床上躺了大半天，找不到活着的理由。他是疯狂的，花了所有的积蓄以求在死之前享受一次最奢华的生活，甚至在大街上以飞快的速度盲开法拉利；他又是理智的，在查理坚持自己的原则不出卖朋友时，挺身而出，发表了最无法辩驳的有力演说，为查理挽回了学籍。
整部片子展现的是人面临抉择时的痛苦。弗兰克面临的是活着还是死亡，查理面对的是说出真相还是对友谊忠诚。查理对绝望的弗兰克说：“烦心了就跳探戈。”弗兰克找到了活着的理由，查理在弗兰克的帮助下解决了人生的难题。
“探戈和人生不一样，无所谓对错。它简单，所以才棒。要是踏错步或者绊倒了，继续跳就好。”这是弗兰克在跳那段经典舞步之前对年轻的小姐所说的。其实人生也可以简单如探戈，做错了，可以再开始。这也是弗兰克可以继续在这他妈的人生里活下去的最好诠释。
面对人生的十字路口，你会选择对的那条路，还是选择容易的那条路？中校的演讲中给了最好的答案。
