Passage 9｜Red Planet: China lands on Mars 红色星球：中国着陆火星

The China National Space Administration announced that one of its spacecraft, which had been orbiting the fourth planet from the sun since February 10th /as part of a mission /called Tianwen-1, made a successful,/ nine-minute descent earlier today.

中国国家航天局宣布其一艘飞船今早成功着陆，历时九分钟。该飞船作为火星探测任务“天问一号”的一部分，自二月十日以来就一直绕火星飞行。

It blazed through the upper atmosphere protected by a heat-shield, before slowing itself down further with a parachute. At the end of the descent it used rockets to settle itself onto the surface. Next a rover called Zhurong is to trundle off the lander, and begin a mission of exploration.

着陆器在防热层的保护之下穿过大气层，而后借助降落伞进一步减速， 在着陆的最后阶段利用火箭成功着陆在火星表面。接下来，“祝融”号火星车将驶离着陆器，并开始其探索任务。

The only country to have managed such “soft landings” on Mars till now was America, which landed its  Perseverance rover there / in February. Both of the European Space Agency’s attempts to do so have failed. That China managed to succeed on its first attempt will cement the impression that it is second only to America in its spacefaring capabilities.

在此之前，美国是唯一成功实现此类“软着陆”的国家。今年二月，美国的“毅力”号探测器着陆火星。而欧洲航天局的两次着陆尝试均以失败告终。中国首次探索即取得成果，这给人留下了深刻印象，使得人们认为航天能力仅次于美国。
