Nuihaku are garments with designs in embroidery and gold and silver leaf.In a reversal of proportion, small courtly carriage motifs in finely detailed embroidery are featured alongside large lilies rendered

in loose longstitch. The unembroidered areas of the favric reveal a design of undulating lines in gold leaf.

One of these figurines has a sickle at his waist and a male hairstyle, while the other is thought to represent a woman. The gender of haniwa figurines is determined by their clothes and hairstyles, the former of which are based on the clothes of horse-riding people from northern Asia brought to Japan around the 4th-5th century. One theory suggests that the raised-arm pose and the portrayal of the sickle is similar to that seen in haniwa figurines of horse-keepers.
