This section of Whittier Narrows Recreation Area features several lakes, abundant waterfowl, picnic tables, public restrooms and well tended walking and jogging trails. About 200 Temple City residents returned to their homes after being evacuated when gasoline fumes were discovered in a sewer. Firefighters diluted the gasoline with fire retardant foam. The gasoline had been flowing south toward a sewage treatment plant in Whittier Narrows Recreation Area about a quarter of a mile south of the Pomona Freeway and Rosemead Boulevard. The pavement turns into a sandy trail wending its way to the shade under a bridge, where two teenagers are shooting arrows at carp in the tea colored river. With plastic bags and brown scum collecting in the reeds, there is nothing pristine about this spot along the Rio Hondo.
