Digimask is a cutting-edge technology that uploads one or two photographs of a person to create a realistic, fully-animatable 3D model of that person’s head.
The actual consumer process for this is very simple and can take as little as 15 seconds to generate.
Digimask Ltd is a technology company which has spent 6 years researching and developing its proprietary system specifically for mass-market (consumer) use. We believe we are the technical leaders in this area, due to our unique combination of simplicity and speed of creation with accuracy and versatility of the 3D Head.
Disney has licensed the Digimask technology to create their 'Piratizer' application to promote the forthcoming movie, 'Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End'. http://www.pirate3dhead.com
We think it is one of the best uses for Digimask seen so far!
Digimask Joins the Unreal® Engine 3 Integrated Partners Program
1st November 2006
'Today Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, announced that the Xbox Live Vision Camera can be used in conjunction with Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six® Vegas for the Xbox 360™ video game and entertainment system from Microsoft. Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas is the fifth iteration of the multimillion-selling tactical shooter franchise and will be available on store shelves in November.
Once online, players of Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Vegas will be able to push the customization by putting his or her own face on the character using the Xbox Live Vision Camera. In just two simple steps, a head-on photo and a profile photo taken with the Vision Camera, gamers can create a custom head that looks exactly like the actual player. Once the custom head is completed, players can move on to customize their online character further by choosing weapons, clothing, camouflage and body armor.'
User experience
The Launch Pad program must first be loaded into the PC. The user takes 1 or 2 photos of their head (one face-on, one side-profile) and optionally marks several points on the photos as directed. Within a a few seconds their 3D Head is created, complete with 'virtual muscles' allowing full animation for speech, expression and deformation if required. The high-resolution head is then saved on the hard drive for use/importation into any supported game. The above process is a one-off as once the Head is saved, it can be used with any Digimask-enabled game.
Behind the scenes
By incorporating the SDK library into a game, developers are able to import the DMK head into their game engine at runtime. The DMK data is a compressed, platform independent and proprietary format. Essentially all the SDK does is to decode this data for the developers game engine. The developer passes in the DMK data, the SDK reveals the 3D data. They can then request a DAG with polygon and texture data at whatever resolution suits them. For animation, the heads use influence skinning (bones). This information is then stored by the developer in their own scene-graph. Once all the data is extracted the SDK library can be shut-down (releasing any memory used) and the game can continue without any interference from the SDK.
