T: Nowadays, we are surrounded by advertising in our daily lives. Some people believe this has a positive effect on society. Others, however, say that it is a negative development.
Discuss both views...
Whether advertisements in public spaces have a positive or negative impact on society as a whole is certainly up for debate. In this essay, I will discuss both sides of this issue and conclude by explaining my own view.
It is often argued that advertising can benefit society in general.[1] One reason for this view is that commercial advertising enables member of the public to find out about the latest products and upcoming events easily. [2]For example, passengers in Taiwan can access information easily by reading posters on the bus or train. [3]Another argument in favour of advertising is that it makes the environment brighter and more colourful. [4]Adverts usually use vivid colours to attract the eye, and this can make people feel happy in their daily lives.[5]
In contrast, opponents of this view maintain that advertising has a detrimental impact on society as a whole. [1]According to this view, the constant commercial pressure on citizens can encourage consumers to purchase items which are not really necessary. [2]By way of example, many people in Taiwan buy the latest mobile phones and other electronic devices due to the power of advertising. [3]This can also lead to more debt since consumers are encouraged to shop on their credit cards or to pay for items in instalments.[4]
In conclusion, advertising is clearly a double-edge sword. [1]However, my personal view is that the huge amount of advertising surrounding us makes society worse. [2]The main reason is that there is simply so much advertising nowadays that it has become an eyesore and prevents us from enjoying public spaces such as parks and buildings. [3]Therefore, I personally believe that advertising should be more strictly regulated and even restricted in certain areas.[4]
