After suffering a dreadful cold in the middle of the holidays, my friend said to me:
“You know what you need?” with a wry smile.
“Er…. Some cold medicine?”
“No fool! You need some ultra-spicy hotpot down you!”
“You paying?”
“Yes, my treat! Save you from any medical fees!”
So on a cold winters evening, on my friend's recommendation we made our way to Qianhu World or Qianhu Tiandi for hotpot in Weishuwu. It's a Sichuan style hotpot franchise that can be found around China. We ended having the Ying-yang style pot just in case I couldn't handle the "medicinal" spicy half:
It's a normal Chinese affair. You get a menu and you tick off what items you want. So as you can see from the picture, we ordered meats only. For me it's normally ‘meat n two veg’, but my friend has a sort of obsession with eating meat only. Thankfully on this occasion, meats were of great quality. As you would expect from a hotpot, we ordered a lot so I will just talk about the highlights.
From the picture below you wouldn't have guessed it, but these are epic slices of ox tongue. If my friend didn't tell me what they really were, from taste and texture, I would have thought I was eating thinly sliced fillets of steak. They had a real beefy taste and were especially delicious when cooked in the spicy half of the hotpot. This was the star of the show!
The next one is not for the faint hearted. From the photo below, it's not noodles hanging on a wooden frame. Actually, it's offal, it's intestine. If you're feeling adventurous and brave, have a go at eating this. When it comes to food, I'm willing to try anything. I had a go and it wasn't for me. But my friend loved it.
We had the classics - thinly cut slices of lamb and beef as well as rice cakes for some starch. Now, since my friend was paying for the meal, he was doing the ordering. This one was not welcome… he ordered sheep's brain for me. Texture was like tofu in the mouth. But boy… it had its own distinctive flavour.
After finishing the meal, I left more than satisfied. The night didn't seem that cold on the way back home and my belly felt nice and warm. The chillies must have done something good because my nasal cavity was unblocked. Perhaps my friend was right…. So whether you need a cure for the common cold or just fancy a decent hotpot, Weishuwu is perhaps your best choice.
