Winning yet Losing: Boeing

Fresh from signing a $13.8bn deal to sell 39 aircraft to Singapore Airlines, the American aerospace and defence giant announces what should be strong third-quarter results today.

*fresh from = just 刚刚

*sign a deal/contract 签合同

【赏析】不一定用because/so,而用时间词来表示因果关系,句首的fresh from可以用after/in the wake of等时间词来替代。

② Boeing delivered 7.4% more commercial aircraft than in the same period a year earlier, outweighing a 12% slide in defence contracts.

*deliver v.

in the same period 同期

*outweigh v.

*slide n.

③ Yet Dennis Muilenburg, Boeing's boss, should fear for his job.

④ Earlier this year, under attack from President Donald Trump, he supported the president's call for more tariffs on imports.

⑤ America's Commerce Department then slapped tariffs of more than 300% on rival C-Series airliners made by Bombardier—but this annoyed many of Boeing's biggest customers.

⑥ Then last week the Canadian planemaker gave Airbus, Boeing's European arch-rival, half the project for free, sidestepping tariffs by making the C-Series for American customers in its Alabama plant.

*sidestep v. 绕开

⑦ "This is a win-win-win situation for everyone," crowed Tom Enders, Airbus's chief executive.

*crow v.

⑧ Except Boeing, that is.
