A generally acknowledged fact is that old age is revered in some cultures, especially in many eastern countries. However, in other cultures, western countries in particular, they value youth more. In my opinion, both are worthy of attention and each has its own value.

To begin with, in oriental nations such as China, South Korea and Japan, filial piety is highly valued, because Confucian philosophy considers it a virtue to honor one’s father, elders and ancestors. Not only do individuals in oriental cultures respect the elderly, but also they celebrate old age. For them, the 60th and 70th birthdays are prominent life events, which are commemorated with large-scale family parties and feasts.

Furthermore, age brings wisdom, which means older people are generally more experienced, mature, and intelligent than the younger generation. Advice is always sought from the elders on a range of issues, from nitty-gritties of traditional wedding rituals to intra-family conflicts. Likewise, in Confucian-orientated societies where seniority is the main way of gaining power, decision making is likely to be in the hands of older managers in companies because people that hold the power make the decisions.

In contrast, the young are usually energetic and innovative. Their abundant energy and innovative spirit can assist them to transcend any handicap and accomplish any feat. More importantly, they are always creative and assertive. Creativity endows a young man with a valuable open-mindedness while self-confidence gives him tremendous courage to overcome difficulties. Besides, their flexibility does facilitate them to adapt easily in new living and working environments, which enables them to keep up with the rapid speed of this ever-changing world.

In summary, the young need appreciation and acceptance from others especially from their parents and elders and vice versa. Therefore, a civilized and progressive society is one that respects the old and cherishes the young because both are equally important and valuable.    (313 words)
