On Monday this week, I had asked my boy’s teacher if I could share telling an English pic story with some kids in my boy’s class, the answer was yes. Since I never did this before, I need to evaluate the whole story telling time, such as the listeners’ age、English level、their interests and etc. there was one thing I must do, consulting the supervisor Lily. I was so appreciated that She sincerely gave lots of good advices and the whole of procedure, she suggested me the focus need to be on the numbers instead of environment protection, big big thanks to Master Lily. I prepared some homemade toys used for telling the story, and practiced the warm up exercises and telling the story.

rsday, I brought what I prepared to the kingdergarden. Since my boy’s class was a mix-aged class, the teacher chose the youngest group about 13 kids to be my story listeners. First, I introduced myself, they were obviously very happy coz they already knew as the uncle cop. The second step moved to the warm up activities, I mixed the “if u happy and you know it clap ur hands” and the number song, they liked that so much. The atmosphere was beyond my expectation. The 3rd part came to the introduction of the story toys, this part also attracted the kids’ attention.

Here came to the storying telling part, I began to sang the book and I used the story toys at the same time. When I sang “so one man flew away”, the kids thought the little man wasn’t flying away, he was carelessly slipped and fell down from the spacecraft. This reminded me their English were not enough to understand the book’s meaning. So I readjust me my gesture and be more exaggerated which to attracted the kids’ interests. I need to focus on the numbers just ass Master Lily told me before. I invited them to help me counting the how many little men were left on the spacecraft. It worked, they could do it easier, and I tried to invite them to count the numbers in English again, they were happy to do that.

After I finished telling the story, I introduced I wanted some volunteers to be the five little men, whom pretended on a spacecraft travelling around the earth, and I also told them that this section they need to followed my story telling. So the five little men joined the activity and flew away happily instead of sadly, they were just having fun.

At the end, I asked them why the five little men didn’t want to stay on earth and just flew away at first, most of them said the little men slipped and fell down, luckily one kid said because of the traffic jam, one kid said because of the forest fire.

For the first time I read an English pic book to such little kids, I truly felt it was not that easy to be an teacher, great thanks to all the teachers. My strongest feeling yesterday was happy, although I got lots of things to improve, but staying with kids, happy was the key elements. Next time I need to evaluate the listeners’ English level and interests, choosing the more appropriate book.
