Lesson 93 A noble gift

Story

Gifts play an important role in our daily lives. It may show the value of your relationship with others when you buy gifts. Meanwhile, it is important for people to pay much attention about others' likes and dislikes when they pick a gift. However, people may be struck by a hand-made gift rather than a gift that you buy from the store. I remember the best gift that I have ever received is my 20th birthday gift, which is a journal that made by one of my intimates. This journal nearly has 100 pages that she had started to write it before one hundred days before my birthday. It contains some stories and photographs about us. I burst into tears when I received this gift, and I cannot imagine how much efforts she had made or how much time she dedicated to the gift. To be honest, we didn't have a strong relationship when we were in high school. But our relationship had become stronger, as we were the only two girls who haven't gone to universities in our hometown among the other friends. I am genuinely glad to say that we almost have a steady relationship for a decade. Honestly, I am not sure whether we will have a long-lasting friendship, but my heart will always have a special place for her.  

Words and expressions

1. Pedestal

It means the base that a column, state, etc. rest on.

 To put / place sb on a pedestal: means to admire sb so much that you do not see.

 Knock sb off their pedestal / perch: means to make sb lose their position as sb /sth successful or admired.  

2. On the verge of sth

It means very near to the moment when sb does sth or sth happens.

E.g. He was on the verge of tears.

3. Serving

It means an amount of food for one person.

E.g. The recipe will be enough for four servings.

  Can I have a serving for noodle?

  Three servings of ice creams.
