劳拉：欢迎收看《文化趣问答》，我是主持人Laura。自从来了中国，我就各种找机会尝试中国菜。但每次看菜谱的时候，那些奇怪的菜名总是让我一筹莫展。就比方说这道菜吧，为什么叫“东坡猪肉”呢？难不成这是中国特有的猪肉品种吗？
Laura:Welcome to Cultural Check! I’m Laura, your host for today. Ever since I came to China, I’ve been trying out new kinds of Chinese food at every chance I can get. But every time I try to read a menuat a restaurant here, the names would always seem tothrow me off.For example, why is this dish called “Dongpo Pork”? Is this some kind of special Chinese pork that’s onlyfound in China?
多方寻求答案之后，终于揭晓了心中的疑惑……
劳拉：后来我才知道，相传东坡肉其实是大文学家苏东坡发明的一道菜，他在徐州为官时，家家户户都给他送猪肉，以慰劳他多年来治理有方。作为报答，他创制了这道风味独特的荤菜，这就是“东坡肉”名字的由来。
Laura: It turns out that Dongpo Pork was actually created by Su Dongpo, who was a great scholar from the Song Dynasty. When he was a local official in Xu Zhou, people would give him pork as a sign of appreciation for looking after the community. In return, he created this unique pork dish. That’s why it’s called “Dongpo Pork”.
劳拉：我就在想啊，还有哪些很有意思的中国菜名呢？我就做了一点点调查，设计了一个连线游戏，一起来看一下。
Laura: This made me start thinking ... what other names of Chinese dishes are named in an interesting way? So I did some research and came up with a matching game. Check it out!
Laura小姐姐邀请小伙伴做游戏，然而真是万万没想到！
马特：那我选这个“两口子肺的薄片儿”吧，这个看上去挺像肺的。这个应该放到这里。这个碗像是个火山口吧。中间那块肉像佛陀。我猜我应该对了3个。
Matt: Well all right. So we’re gonna choose “Man and wife lung slices”. Those look a little lung-like. It seems this one here. The bowl is volcano-shaped. Piece of meat in the middle is round like a Buddha. I’m predictingI've got maybe three right.
大牛：我天，这个游戏太让人激动了。我觉得马特连的这个“青龙点将”是正确的。这道“拜拜了我的小老婆”，像是以悲剧告终的人，像（悲剧英雄）庞培一样。
Daniel:Oh boy. I’m really excited to do this. “Green dragon points at the warriors”, I think Matt is correct.This one “Farewell my concubine” ... maybe they died in atragedy like Pompey.
大牛：把这个托起来的时候，感觉像蚂蚁顺杆往上爬一样，试试看吧。这个应该是我猜得最准的一个了。至少比马特猜得准多了。
Daniel: When you pick it up, it kinda looks like ants climbing up it, so we’ll try that. That’s my best guess. It’s better than Matt’s anyway.
劳拉：大牛竟然全猜对了！但有的理由不太充分。我们来看看这个“拜拜了我的小老婆”吧。这道菜是“甲鱼熬鸡汤”，起个名字叫“拜拜了我的小老婆”总感觉哪里怪怪的。这道菜的名字来自中国古代的一位将军和他的爱妾的故事，听上去很像甲鱼鸡汤，这名字真机智！
Laura: Daniel got them all right! But his reasoning is a bit off. OK. Now we have “Farewell my concubine”. Let’s see what this is. It’s “Soft-shelled turtle and chicken soup”. Now this may seem weird to have “Farewell my concubine”. In ancient Chinese history, there is a story about a general and his concubine. And the name for this actually sounds like turtle and chicken. Pretty clever.
劳拉：我们来看看“火山飘雪”吧，其实就是“西红柿蘸糖”。
Laura:Let’s see “Snowy volcano”- “Tomato slices with refined sugar topping”.
劳拉：好，这个写的是“四样干果”，包括红枣，花生，桂圆和莲子，放在一起就是“早生贵子”，寓意祝福新婚夫妇早生贵子，开枝散叶。
Laura:OK, so the description for this is “Four kinds of dried fruits”. We have red dates, “zǎo”) , peanuts “huā shēng”, longans “guì yuán” and lotus seeds “lián zǐ”. When you put these words together, it sounds like “zǎoshēngguìzǐ”, which is wishing the newly-wedsto start having children and to build a big family.
劳拉：想看明白中餐菜谱还是要下点功夫的，不过也没关系！给大家总结了几条中国菜命名的大致规律，再也不用担心看不懂菜谱了！
Laura: It takes a bit of effort to read and understand a Chinese menu. But that’s okay! Here are some of the patternsthat are usually involved when naming Chinese food to make it a bit easierfor you to understand:
一、名中有数。基本是指这道菜中某些食材的数量。
1.Numbers. They could probably refer to the number of different ingredients in the dish.
二、成语故事。只要有个好故事，你自然会想亲口尝一尝这道菜。
2.Background stories or idioms. An interesting story will make you want to try the dish out for yourself.
三、寓意吉祥。一道菜要是连名字都不好听，谁还愿意点呢？
3.Good wishes.Nobody would want to order something that sounds off-putting, right?
四、造型独特。要是菜名中有描述摆盘的字眼，你根本无法从菜单中挪走视线，为了以后不后悔，赶紧给厨房下单吧！
4.Eye-catching plating. If the description of the food makes you curiousenough to where you can’t take your eyes away from the menu, then you might want totry it out before you regret it.
劳拉：这些命名规律都体现了中国人在命名方面的智慧与浪漫。不光是食物，很多事物的名字都起得很有才！
Laura: All of these different naming patterns show that Chinese people are pretty clever and romantic in how they name things. And this isn’t just for food either, there are a lot of clever names for other things, too!
劳拉：比如“蛟龙号”深海载人潜水器，它的名字来源于中国古代神话里的一条海龙；“天宫号”空间实验室，意思是“天堂宫阙”；还有我最喜欢的以月宫仙子“嫦娥”命名的人造卫星和她的“玉兔”命名的月球探测器。她们飞向月球，去探索未知的世界，多浪漫啊！
Laura: For example, “jiāo lóng hào”, the deep-sea manned submersible, which is named after a sea dragon from ancient Chinese mythology; the space lab “tiān gōng”, which means “Heavenly Palace”; and here comes my favorite, the man-made satellite named after the moon fairy “cháng é” and the lunar probe named after her pet Jade Rabbit “yù tù”. They both travel to the Moon Palace, to explore the unknown world. Isn’t that so romantic?
