Human Origins Traveling Exhibition: Family tree

February 12, 2015

Smithsonian's Human Origins Program

The new traveling exhibition tells the story of how humans, or Homo sapiens, are descended from a complex tree of upright walking ancestors, including species from the genera Ardipithecus, Australopithecus and Paranthropus.

Who are our ancestors?

Why did our earliest ancestors leave the trees and start to walk on two legs?

What other primitive people lived with them?

Did they have language?

Were they predators or prey?

These are fundamental questions that we want to understand when we know who we are. In remaking the course of human evolution After the evolution stage.

ape man tells the remarkable epic of our 5-million-year journey from ape to man, And answer the questions that have plagued mankind for so long. This extraordinary story has been pieced together from a host of fossil finds, prehistoric cave paintings, discarded stone tools, and traces of ancient genetic material. In this dramatic and highly readable account, Robin McKie, Science editor of The Observer, unravels the saga of how these discoveries have allowed us to build up a picture of our ancestors' lives. It is a gripping scientific detective story that reveals how our world has come to be dominated by a single primate species: Five million years of human evolutionary history.

The clues to our past include astonishing human-like footprints, preserved in volcanic ash sediments for over 3.5 million years, made by creatures -- half- ape, half-man -- already walking on two legs; a startlingly well-preserved skeleton unearthed at Lake Turkana, Kenya, revealing the grim life-and-death story of an 11-year-old boy who lived on the African savannah 1.5 million years ago; and minute DNA samples which some scientists believe will help them trace back the lineage of Homo sapiens to one African woman who lived 200,000 years ago.

Paleoanthropologists have been trying to find the right answer. Most paleoanthropologists believe that: Real people are marked by manufacturing tools, Real people appear before the human ancestors, Scientists call it "predecessor". Erection is the morphological mark of the predecessors separated from the main line of the great apes, He separated from the trunk area is the earliest human cradle. Real people constantly evolving, Finally become a modern man, At the same time it forms a modern different race, This is an evolutionary process Is the last cradle of human evolution. The ancient frescoes found in archaeology are complex, They believe that this is evidence of human symbolic thought. These murals are not created by one person alone, They are The human community Go together, Share evidence of a life experience. At the same time Intelligent human society Go together, common share Evidence of life experience, At the same time Is also Intelligent human beings, On which hypnosis And the original method of medical disease. The murals mark us search for a source of self, 33,000years ago, Our biological evolution Finally completed, start a set of Self values, We have become complete human beings.

This landmark series about the evolution of man answers fundamental questions, Step by step it reveals the amazing drama of our history. This film is six episodes: Contact, First Born, Body, Love, Exodus and Human. From this we can feel the early humans, In the experience of barbarism, The Received pain and the fear, as well as the joy and delight of enjoying nature. The film successfully revealed - The origin of humanity. This is the greatest story of all: Human evolutionary history.

What were early people like?

These questions have inspired scientists throughout the ages to piece together the fragmentary clues the early humans left behind. This direct and involving story of their detective work in search of the truth about our evolution takes us through the breakthroughs and setbacks in the epic journey towards the truth about our shared past, and we discover that our early ancestors were, in many ways, people like us. At the heart of this series are stunning dramatic recreations which bring into focus the lives of the early humans.

Illustrated with evocative recreations of early man and his landscapes, photographs of the human fossils and the paleontologists who discovered them, and maps of key fossil sites, this book -- which accompanies the ground-breaking new BBC television series ape-man -- unravels the clues, the setbacks, the human dramas and the scientific disputes to tell the astonishing story of our ancestry.
