Language is viewed as a system of forms in linguistics, but it is regarded as a set of skills in the field of language teaching.  Language teaching aims at the learner's mastery of language. To bridge the gap between the theories of linguistics and the practice of foreign language teaching, applied linguistics serves as a mediating area which interprets the results of linguistic theories and makes them user-friendly to language teacher.

Besides, various linguistic views are of great significance to class teaching:

The structuralist linguistics(结构主义语言学)lays emphasis on the grammatical structures and forms, which is beneficial to sentence drilling in the English class teaching.

Traditional grammar(传统语法)pays attention to the correctness and purity of language, introducing lots of rules and definition. It is a teacher-based teaching method, and frequently can be seen in traditional English class teaching.

Of course, other sorts of linguistic theories are transformational-generative linguistics(转换生成语言学),functional linguistics(功能语言学),the theory of communicative competence(交际能力理论). They contribute to class teaching as well. If the language teacher can applied these linguistic theory to the class teaching , we will see whether the linguistic theory is practical or not.
