Legend says that on a rocky pinnacle, Athena and the god of the sea Poseidon competed to rule a new city. Athena stamped her foot on the limestone and an olive tree sprang up. Poseidon in turn thrust his mighty Triton into a rock and a spring gushed forth, but it was Athena's olive tree that would make the region prosper. As a result, Athena became the supreme divinity of the city, named after her the city of Athens.

Athena was said to have protected the citizens of Athens during many battles on their sacred citadel called the Acropolis.The ancient Athenians paid homage to Athena by building her a magnificent marbled monument, called the Parthenon. A 40-foot gold and ivory statue of the goddess once stood inside this columned wonder. Every four years, Athenian celebrated their Guardians birthday by putting on a lavish festival and included a feast with dancing, wine and the sacrifice of hundreds of bulls.
