Key West: The trolley

by Louise Wang

“Key West here I come!” I shouted happily as I got off the bus, I looked at the map and found out that the trolley stop was right next to us. We pre-ordered the tickets on the bus so we didn't have to waste time.

“Come on” I said to my mom “let's go! ”

We ran to the trolley and got on.

“One at a time people one at a time” the trolley conductor projected his voice as large amounts of tourists packed the doorway of the orange and fairly small trolley. My mom and I were lucky since we were the first one to get on the trolley. Key West is part of the Florida Keys It is very sunny and there were lots of Seagulls cooing and cawing so I'm glad that the three hours and a half trip from Miami paid off. In my opinion, it is the best and most historical place in the United States I have been to.

We passed through stop 3 and 4 where the conductor told us about the neighborhood. Stop 5 was my mom's favorite; Ernest Hemingway's house. The house was white and it was surrounded by tall, skyscraping trees. Ernest Hemingway is an author and wrote many books about or similar to war. He won the Nobel Prize in 1954 and his most famous novel Old Man and the Sea won a Pulitzer Prize in 1953.

After quite a few stops we went into New Key West. New Key West Was made by the US Army because they thought there weren’t enough space. In World War II Key West was used as an army base to defend from other countries. Now Key West has three active army bases. Key West is the most southern county in the United States. It is ninety miles away from Cuba. This is why Key West has so many Cuban restaurants, There were a lot of signs on the Cuban restaurant like $0.90 to Cuba and they had large beautiful Christmas trees that glimmered in the dark. How ever these Christmas trees are not like the Christmas trees in New York. The ones in the Cuban restaurants are fake and they have different ornaments. For example in a fish selling store they have fishes and sea related ornaments, but New York only has only ornament related to Christmas, like balls and stars.

During my ride on the trolley, I saw a lot of red, blue and yellow feathered roosters. They were standing high and proud like a general winning a war. Another animal I saw were lizards. The conductor told us that the lizards were green when they were young, and brown when they were adults. Aw so cute I thought as I saw one standing on a large tree stump. I saw a lot of lizards in Key West than any place I visited.

As I said in my first paragraph Key West personally is my favorite place in the United States, and also teaches me a lot of facts. I hope I will visit this island again and explore its history even more.
