No.1 非洛丽塔的美
简单粗暴地几个字概括这部电影就是：中年大叔爱上女儿的同学。
同样是大叔爱上少女的故事，但这不是洛丽塔，绝对不是洛丽塔、一点都不洛丽塔。
主人公莱斯特因为生活苦闷到了极致，因为女儿的同学——有着青春身体的女孩，重新找到了生活的乐趣，与其说是乐趣，不如说是“性”趣，沉浸在自己的性幻想中，一个很洛丽塔的开始。
但是影片的最后却是莱斯特捧着一家三口的照片，眼中闪烁着感激、幸福、快乐的光芒。莱斯特从死气沉沉到重新点燃生活的激情，直到最终才体悟到生命的美，而那样的美正是台词中的流星雨、奶奶手上的皮肤……
看完了，你或许也会觉得仿佛承受不住这世界的美，心，感觉要爆炸了一样。
No.2 玫瑰花
American Beauty，即电影的英文名，是一种美国玫瑰花，美丽，却花期很短。
玫瑰的影子也贯彻着影片，似乎有着更深刻的象征意义：妻子在院子里摘玫瑰花，莱斯特性幻想时总是由玫瑰为背景，莱斯特最终醒悟时桌子上摆着的红玫瑰，以及最后在墙上用血绽放的“玫瑰花”。
美丽，花期很短。是指人生美丽，但生命太短，也指“总有一天你会明白”到来之前，浪费的美丽与生命。
No.3 感恩
“那一天我突然发现，事物的背后都有一种生命，一股慈悲的力量，让我知道其实我不必害怕，永远不用怕。它让我牢记，这个世界有时候，拥有太多美，我好像无法承受，我的心，差一点就要崩溃。”影片中的男孩里基用摄像机拍了15分钟的塑料袋，对，就是一个在空中飞舞的塑料袋，他感激而无力地感叹着世间的美。
所谓的美并不是雨后刻意寻找的彩虹，而就是雨水。美像雨水一样洗涤着我们，我们不得不对自己卑微而短暂的生命，在每一刻都充满感激。
