University students are often encouraged to study fields in which significant job growth is expected; these fields currently include science, technology, engineering and math, do you believe students should consider studying fields related to these subjects even if they are more interested in other subjects. Why and Why not ?

Do you want to know that how many university students in Chinese universities regret that they have chosen the major doesn’t suit them or they don’t like at all? The recent study shows that this number can approach to about 30 percent, which is quite astonishing.Besides this finding, if we make further research of this study, we can find out that the majority of these regretful students are majoring the seemly‘useless’ majors such as physiology or arts. While students majored in subjects related to science and technology enjoy the most satisfaction of their study and future career. What makes that happen?

As the science and technology develops, there are more and more vacant job positions related to technology in the jobmarket while it seems like that the vacancies of the job related to liberalarts remain at a low level for many years. Students major in those so-calledhot fields such as computer science, electrical or electronics engineering orthe civil engineering find jobs easily while the students who major in liberalarts fields such as politics, literature or arts hardly find satisfactory jobseven they have made great efforts. It seems quite unfair to students. However, the society is under the rule of supply and demand. Because of the significantjob growth in the fields related to science and technology, students shouldconsider studying in those fields if they want to get employed as soon aspossible. The employment tendency depends on the job market which students haveto follow. It’s never easy to create a job vacation rather than fill in one, right?

Also we need to admit that not manystudents know what exactly the major about and whether they would be good at itwhen they are just going to attend the universities. Especially in China, dueto the lack of education about the choice of major in the universities, students usually make their decisions depending on their parents’ demand butnot themselves’. Before they actually are exposed to the study in universities, most students have a naïve understanding of what the major really is. So theso-called interests in a certain major or field may be just some juvenilespeculations. Take myself for example, I have no idea of what my major isbefore I went to the college. And now I have no interests in my major at all.

Though I have interests in painting, Idon’t have the gifts so I give up and turn to find a field which I both haveinterests in and am good at. I know this choice is the best one I can make formy future career development.

Aside from job hunting, establishing someinterests is also a way that promote their chosen subjects. We all know thatEinstein is a great physicist who raise the theory of relativity. When he wasstuck in difficulties in his working area, he played violin for relaxation. Andthe melody helped him make out the solutions. Students who can’t major in thefields they like the most can develop their interests in their part time. Inaddition, establishing some hobbies can be vital stimulation in one’s career aswell as the best way for one to have relaxation.

It cannot be denied that it is a regression that students can’t take the subjects as their major in university, students can deal with it by choosing some courses they have interests in or take part in some clubs. After all, students need to consider their jobs once they graduate. So the subjects related to science and technology are the better choice of major.
