这章一开头我花了好多时间,因为实在太多jargon,比如说篮球运动员偏偏说hoopster,还有冰球运动员pucksters。读这一章让我彻底怀疑自己英语水平,以至于读了一个小时只读了一两页而很沮丧。


PART ONE VOCABULARY

1.circuit,clout

As an addict of the sports pages in my boyhood, I learned about the circuit clout before I learned about the electrical circuit.

circuit:(in sport)a series of games or matches in which the same players regularly take part

clout:[uncountable]power and influence

political/financial clout

I knew his opinion carried a lot of clout with them.

2.southpaw,lanky

Southpaws were always lanky, portsiders always chunky,

southpaw: a person who prefers to use their left hand rather than their right, especially in a sport such as boxing

lanky:(of a person)having long thin arms and legs and moving in an awkward way

3.chunky

portsiders always chunky,

chunky: thick and heavy

4.snuffing out

snuffing out a rally and dimming his team’s hopes in the flag scramble.

snuff out: stop or destroy something completely 

5.rhapsodize

I could rhapsodize about the old pigskin—more passionately than any pig farmer—and describe the frenzied bleacherites caught up in the excitement of the autumn classic.

rhapsodize:to talk or write with great enthusiasm about something

6.frenzied

frenized:a state of great activity and strong emotion that is often violent or frightening and not under control

7.cupidity

he wrote, noting that the cupidity of team owners has a tendency to outrun the courage of the sport’s monitors.

cupidity:a strong desire for more wealth, possessions, power, etc. than a person need

8.misapprehension

What keeps most sportswriters from writing good English is the misapprehension that they shouldn’t be trying to.

misapprehension:a wrong idea about something, or something you believe to be true that is not true

9.solitary

Something in Updike made contact with something in Williams: two solitary craftsmen laboring in the glare of the crowd.

solitary:done alone; without other people



PART TWO THOUGHTS

Hang around the track and the stable, the stadium and the rink. Observe closely. Interview in depth. Listen to old-timers. Ponder the changes. Write well.比赛

亲近观察,深入采访、倾听、思考,才能写出好的文章。

作者在文章说些体育的文章最独特在于humanity,说人话。

钱在美国体育届也同样黑暗。运动员赢得一场高尔夫可以赚多少钱。巨额的钱同样带来很多情感上的麻烦。足球和篮球的工资高的让人生气。我想起国足,恒大的球员一球可获得几百万加一套房子,不断砸钱进去希望这些球员能像以前一样进世界杯,因此花了巨额请来银狐里皮,还有很多外援,在中国踢足球一年够他们以前好多年的工资。然而国足真大幅提高水平了么?
