Lesson 36 Across the Channel 横渡海峡

Erna Hart is going to swim across the English Channel tomorrow. She is going to set out from the French coast at five o'clock in the morning. Erna is only fourteen years old and she hopes tbeo set up a new world record. She is a strong swimmer and many people feel that she is sure to succeed. Erna's father will set out with her in a small boat. Mr Hart has trained his daughter for years. Tomorrow he will be watching her anxiously as she swims the long distance to England. Erna intends to take short rests every two hours. She will have something to drink but she will not eat any solid food. Most of Erna's school friends will be waiting for her on the English coast. Among them will be Erna's mother, who swam the Channel herself when she was a girl.

I am going to swim across the English Channel tomorrow and I have planned it for two years. All I wish is to set up a new world record. I started learning 'swimming'[=> to swim] six years ago when I was nine years old. My father is 'a coach of swimming'[=> a swimming instructor] and he always trained me hard. I will set out from French coast on five o'clock and my father will be following me by a small boat to ensure my safty. I intend to take rests every two hours and have something to drink. I will not eat anything solid. Most of my school friends will be waiting for me on ''[=> the] English coast and among them will be my mother who swam across the Channel when she was a girl of my age.
