1. Can you introduce yourself?
Answer: Hi, guys. My name is Yu zheng. (郑昱). I am a Chinese English teacher. But currently, I am not teaching. I am doing my MA in the UK. My interest lies in non-native English teacher development and teaching for academic purposes.
2. Why're you interested in Irish beer?
Answer: I am not a pub person. It was not until I traveled to Dublin that I got interested in beer. The climate in Ireland doesn’t lend itself to sitting outside most of the time. A pub is a top choice for people to meet and gather. Drinking and chatting in a pub after work to Irish people is like sharing a hot pot in the evening to most of the Chinese people. It is a social hut. To have some experience in local life, you must go to some pubs.
While there are a variety of drinks to choose, beer is definitely the most popular one. It is far less strong than spirits and cheaper. And the local natural conditions contribute to the beer of high quality.
3. Tell us the most popular Irish beer.
Answer: Everywhere you go, you will see “Guinness”, which is dry stout, which means strong dark beer. The words “dry” or “Irish” are often tacked onto “stout” in order to differentiate it from English and American sweet or milk stouts, which usually contain oatmeal (燕麦) or lactose (乳糖).
Irish-style dry stouts are black in color. Their character is mostly defined by coffee-like roasted barley(大麦) and a roasted malt aroma(麦芽芳香). Despite the focus on malt, hop bitterness(酒花苦味) is typically medium to medium high. Dry stouts are often served from nitrogen taps, which create a smooth, creamy mouthfeel. Guinness contains higher calorie and is rich in iron. It used to be given to women who just gave birth to a baby to help them recover and bring in the milk.
The other two styles of beer are ales and lager. Irish ales are characterized by their reddish color, malt accents, slightly sweet palate, and low hopping. Harp Lager, a typical Irish lager, has a brilliant bright pale golden color with fruity notes in its aroma. The taste is crisp with a bitter start however it soon becomes clean and brilliantly refreshing with a smooth finish.
4. What does an Irish pub look like?
Answer: Live music is a must in Irish pubs. The musical instruments include guitar, violin, accordion(手风琴),Irish flute (爱尔兰长笛). Well, a saying goes that a picture is worth a thousand words. Look at these pictures and watch the video.
You don’t need a ticket to get into the pub. Go straight in and seat yourself anywhere. You can enjoy the music without buying anything. Nevertheless, people tend to buy themselves beer to fit in the atmosphere.
5. Is it expensive to go to a pub?
Answer: Well, not that cheap, for me, I mean. Half of the pint is good for a try of each style of beer. Then you make your decision. It costs about 3 euro for half of a pint.
6. Can you introduce some pub English?
Answer: Well, if you fancy Guinness. Tell them: can I have some “black stuff”, which sounds very Irish for Guinness. Or you can ask: “What’s on tap, man? Give me some good black stuff.” The tap beer is not the beer in the bottle. Beer served from the tap tastes very fresh and therefore a little more expensive. The measurement unit is half of a pint or a pint of …or a mug/jug of beer. If you wanna buy somebody a drink, you can say “ it is on me or Put it on my tab..”
