新概念英语第二册 Lesson 73: The record-holder
Children who play truant from school are unimaginative. A quiet day's fishing, or eight hours in a cinema seeing the same film over and over again, is usually as far as they get. They have all been put to shame by a boy who, while playing truant, traveled 1900 miles. He hitch-hiked to Dover and, towards evening, went into a boat to find somewhere to sleep. When he woke up next morning, he discovered that he boat had, in the meantime, traveled to Calais. No one noticed the boy as he crept off. From there, he hitch-hiked to Paris in a lorry. The driver gave him a few biscuits and a cup of coffee and left him just outside the city. The next car the boy stopped did not take him into the centre of Paris as he hoped it would, but to Perpignan on the French-Spanish border. There he was picked up by a policeman and sent back to England by the local authorities. He has surely set up a record for the thousands of children who dream of evading school.

- hitch-hike，搭便车；eg. When my father arrived the vehicle on the highway, he saw a serviceman who wore the uniform walking and preparing hitch hike to go home.
- Dover，多佛(1.英国东南部之一海港;2.美国特拉华州之首府）。这里应该是英国的海港。
- creep off，爬行。eg. Well, before we creep off the pitch with a chronic sense of failure, it's cheering to remember what this generation has achieved. 好吧，在带着习惯性的失败感爬出这片球场前，至少庆幸一件事，对于这代人取得的成绩我们仍留有映象。
- in a lorry，lorry 卡车；运货卡车
- biscuit，饼干；松饼
- Perpignan，佩皮尼昂(法国东比利牛斯省一城市,该省首府,旅游地)
- evade school，逃学。可以跟play truant同义，相互替换使用。
